View Full Version : It has finally happend: I fell prey to "Clay's Virus"

Yes, dear friends, my poor weary body finally gave out late Wednesday night. I fought what seemed a losing battle and in the end, my resolve gave out.
I blame the "Folder King" entirely for this often fatal syndrome.
**Waving at Clay**
~So it is with great JOY that I now announce the addition of my newest 'family' member:
A Bob Lum Chinese Folder in Gunmetal Blue!
O I am a one happy boy today!
Beware! The side affects of "Clay's Virus" take over the body at a fast rate of speed. Soon the victim will notice that he/she will become proud of the knife and then feel an urge to want to show it off to every person they come in contact with!
Hehe!

SpyderNut,
I came down with that about a month ago, I guess it took some time to spread across the country. I wonder if you can get "flu shots" for something like that? Glad to hear you got one, you, like me probably want a green one now !
Thanks Clay

No kind of shot that I know of, just pinch yourself.

Hoosierdaddy,
How did you know I wanted a green Lum??
For a second there, I thought you might be a mind reader! Yes, you are right: some sort of 'flu shot' would be nice for a brief time of relief. If only it lasted!
I have found that "Clay's Virus" has many diverse side affects, one being that I can't seem to put down my 2002 Spydie catalog!

SpyderNut,
Ever since John Jensen sent me the 2001 and 2002 catalogs I've been dreaming! I want them ALL!!! I'm just waiting for Clay to tell me which knife I should buy next
One of the Gun stores I frequent has a green Lum #285 on blade for 135.00. I'm debating whether to buy it. I know that it's a little high priced but it is numbered. It's S/E also, just what I want!

You all are silly. These are just *knives*, nothing more. I'd like to have the chinese folder myself but I think I'm getting a new guitar instead. I know they are tough to clip to your pocket and even worse for IWB carry, but a good guitar gives thousands of hours of enjoyment.

Hey Kid...
Spydies are much more than knives. They also make a great slide for your guitar. Yup... mine make beautiful music. Try it, but beware the spyder doesn't bite you... because then you'll be selling your instruments and buying real tools.

Amen, Gary!
You said that beautifully! I count my knives among my dearest posessions.
They are always by my side, [pun intended!]
and they are there for you in a pinch.
So, do you have any friends or 'things' that you could say the same about??
CalypsoKid, I love music too. But when it boils down between choosing a Spyderco or a new violin bow, I didn't hesitate to get online and check out Newgraham.com for a new Lum! Yeah, I know, its a matter of opinion.
Cheers!

I got my blue lum today from newgraham. It is the most beautiful knife I have seen. It is SCARY sharp,it opens smoothly, the lock engages perfectly, and it feels good in your hand.

CalypsoKid,
Why is the Chinese Folder "tough to clip to your pocket"?? Mine clips in just fine, but its mostly jeans, and sunday suits. Just wondering.
I think everyone should have a CF, green and blue!!

Looks as though it's my fault once again . SpyderNut, welcome to the club. It gives me a warm, fuzzy glow to see more people appreciating the subtle beauty of this superb design. Since I bought my Chinese Folders I've actually reduced my knife buying as I can't find any other knives which have the same attraction for me.
BTW I just saw your post in another thread about clip position. My green Chinese Folder was tip-down when I got it. I tried it that way for a while but finally changed to tip-up and much prefer it. My blue one was tip-up out of the box.
Take care,
Clay

Be caereful Clay, they gave Socrates hemlock for corrupting the young.
Here's a neat pic of a green Lum next to another "must have:" a green Salsa. Pic was posted by Keith over in Bladeforums.

Now it is all the fault of Carlos for showing that comparison. I got a blue lum but a green salsa is on the way. That means I need to buy a green lum and a blue salsa to complete the set.
SpyderNut,
My "Clay illness" has found a cure... More to come later on.

I'll remember that Carlos . It's probably a good thing I live so far away, and who's to say this is my real name anyway .
At the moment I'm more concerned about this "colour virus". I seem to have caught the "blue" version and am seriously thinking of a blue Salsa to go with the blue G10 Native, Almite Navigator, Chinese Folder and Centofante Jr (if it ever arrives, but that's another story ).

Hi Clay,
I have a blue Salsa -- I say go for it! The blue is much darker than the colour shown in the PDR. It also appears purplish in some light. I expect to get the other Almite colours eventually.
Still waiting for my grey Ti Salsa. Should be an interesting comparison.

CalypsoKid,
I love music also, but unless you're Roger Daltry, John Entwistle, Pete Townsend and Kieth Moon (The Who? alright Moons dead but I can't think of Who replaced him) a guitar is not going to defend you very well. I do spend money on other things. I have a real nice gun collection. My life does not revolve around Spyderco, although my girlfriend would disagree! Am I silly for that? You bet! It's none of my business what other people think of me.
When you get a Lum Chinese you'll understand, Clay's right, and although I give him crap every chance I get, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't own one. Thanks Clay
Clay... please slow down... only recommend one knife at a time. For I will end up like Enron and file chapter 11. Thank God I only have Spyderco knife receipts to shred!
Kahz,
Please don't keep us in suspense when you get your Lum Chinese!
In closing... I refer to other brands as "*knives*" but hold Spyderco in higher regard !!!
Hoosier,
I agree with you. My life does not revolve around Spydies, but I do feel a passion for knives just like Calypso does about music. To each his/her own, right?
Once I have more news on my "Clay sickness" remedy, I will post it for all to see.

Clay,
I am SO pleased with the blue Lum. It is a work of beauty! I'm glad you "talked" me into it.
BTW, don't worry about the 'blame thing' bro! I had to blame you for this radical action of mine, mainly because you are the "Folder King" and must have some sort of magical influence on the whims and desires of the rest of us forumites. Hee hee!
[ Just teasing....]
Whatever you do, don't start sipping hemlock! I think Mountain Dew is better for such purposes....
Cheers!

Okay, I have to ask. Does it require a court order to exhume a thread that has been dead for more than 4 years? And were new forensic techniques able to determine the original cause of death?
Sorry, but someone had to do it! :D

Well the thread may have died but I'm still around :). Seems like the virus is also, judging by the amount of recent interest in the blue Chinese Folder. The black ZDP version should bring a lot more people into the "club."
Blades, we'll have to get those T-shirts organised :D .

I would like to say "thank you" Clay for spreading the virus :D I've got it bad and I don't want to find the cure, I'm perfectly happy to have it. I am eagerly awaiting the black ZDP version and please put me down for two T-shirts when they are available. ;) (1-xxl and 1-med)

Hey, Clay, good to see you on the forum...
I have become mostly a lurker these days. I sure do miss some of the old gang.
And, yes, I will be getting one of the Black ZDP versions when it is available.
Blades, thanks for resurecting this bit of history.
