View Full Version : Deviating from Spyderco for first time...

Been a knife collector since pre-teen years but nothing serious back then. For the past several years, I've acquired many knives, 95% of which are our beloved Spyderco. However, I've gone on a recent spree and found myself really digging Emersons and another brand that shall remain nameless. Just curious if you guys have ever strayed from the pack? Did you realize the err of your ways and come back with your tail between your legs? I don't plan on dumping all my Spydies in favor of another brand but for the first time, I find myself testing the waters. BTW do you guys ever check out the knife reviews posted to Youtube? Some of them are quite interesting and some have even caused me to spend some money...

All of the Spydies I've seen reviewed received excellent marks by the way, big surprise.

Glad to hear and hope you're right, because that AXIS lock is the cat's meow! The ball-bearing on my D'allara ain't too shabby either and would like to see more of them!

Heard a reliable rumor there is a ball lock Manix in the works!

In addition to my Spyderco's, I also enjoy knives from other makers, to include Benchmade, Strider, Blade-Tech, Ontario, MercWorx, and Emerson.

I like variety!

There's a difference between blind allegiance and informed choice.

Looking at other products gives you a better perspective on Spyderco. For example, seeing different locks/steels/styles/etc. can make you appreciate Spyderco more, or, alternatively, think, "You know, I prefer this different [fill in the blank]."

As Sal says, "All good, just different."

Agreed - I actually didn't get into :spyder:'s until about folder #100 (I'm up over 200 at this point). Sort of an evolution you go thru, I think, once you get that first "good one":) I tend to go thru "phases" - I'm currently in large folder mode and classy mode. Considering, first, I don't use large folders all that often...... BUT I've always wanted a Police in SE - I have in SS/PE and it didn't get used that much - it was too slippery, but it was also a classic. Then the Police 3 turned up and I bought it in SE - now that prompted me to follow up with a Pacific Salt/SE, E4/SE and then a Ka-Bar large folding hunter and then an SOG Spec Elite 1. Somewhere in there I got a Black Quince Kopa and that prompted me to get a BM930 Kulgera (classy & large:)) The Kulgera is a very interesting piece - it actually "feels" like a smaller folder and even when open, it doesn't "look" like a larger folder, despite the fact the blade is in the 3.5 inch area.

Each has it's merits, all are very well made and work well - doesn't get any better than that:D

I would love to get an Emerson A-100, I just can't get past the fact that it cost $150 and has a liner lock that is rumored to not be that secure.

I carry all sort of knives.

Different brands, just so long as they are quality.

I love the Axis Lock, not much love for the patent owner, and not because of the Spider, but just based on their merits. But their knives, pretty great.

I have a thing for 'different' knives, like I have a Piranha that has a Wood Lock.

I also have a thing for inexpensive but quality knives, like some of the Cold Steel offerings, like the Pocket Bushman and the Finn Bear.

Just for fun, here is a Pocket Dump I did.

I don't have many knives, but I do have more of the others than :spyder: I love my others, they're of good stock, and I keep them sharp, and I would think all of us would appreciate a quality knife.

I dabble with the other makes, Chris Reeve and Benchmade mostly, although my last Benchmade was likely my last a couple of years ago. Except for the occasional offering, not much strikes me as a I want from BM. CRK on the other hand, could spend ait on them or a custom shop Buck or two.

The next knives if and when are likely though to be a Chinook and Police 3 before anything new from Buck or CRK.

A rams horn Buck custom 110 though is mighty tempting (even better if you could still get BG-42 :()....

I'm in this boat. Bought a BM Skirmish a couple years ago, and while I do love it, I probably wont be getting another BM for a while. I would love a Sebenza, the price is the only thing holding me back.

I've also been looking at the Emerson CQC-14 snubby guy, and the CQC-7A. While the liner locks aren't very smooth, I like the "chisel" grind, the ergonomics, and the wave (of course). They seem a bit overpriced, however. :(

I think most of us are guilty when it comes to CLB creations from Boker. :D

It doesn't matter though, I always come back to Spyderco. :) And my E4W might as well be an emerson, just less chunky.

I also have Camillus Robos, Camillus old school, a few CRKT, and a Kershaw.
I hope to one day have a RJ Martin flipper.
