Hi,

I just received my two new knifes:

A plain G-10 Navigator and a serrated G-10 Navigator (this is actually the CX02S) <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

However, the blade on the serrated is very dull. It doesn't look to be used, but it is by far not as sharp as my serrated cricket(s).

I have a sharpmaker 204, but I'm not really sure how I should sharpen a serrated knife. I never could watch the video since that was in NTSC which I can't view in the Netherlands (we have PAL). I tried to get a PAL via my outdoor shop but that never succeeded.

Anyway, can someone give me some tips on how to sharpen the serrated knife?

I gave it a few swipes for each serration, but I'm not sure how to get rid of the burr because the other side of the blade is totally flat (no grind).

And for Spyderco, is it an idea to put the video on-line as MPEG?

Thanks,

Ted

1 st Set you base unit up hand gaurds first.
Then use the fine (whites) and point the corners of the stones in and then take the knife and start on the back serration, and lightly pull down and the blade should hit every scallopped edge as it goes down. It will sound like someone running their fingers down a old wash board if it sounds more the sound your car makes when you hit the rumble stirps on the interstate you are going down to fast and or pressing to hard.
You shoud never have to use the gray's and serrations it wear them out as they are coarse.
Always hold the knife staight up and down the base unit holds the angle for you.
hope this helps.

To add to Spyderholic, you mentioned a burr. To remove that, you have two options: either 3:1 or 1:1. 3 to 1 sharpening involves sharpening the blade 3 strokes on the ground side, one on the unground side. This leaves it very sharp, but the edge is slightly brittle.

1 to 1 involves sharpening the knife on both sides, same as a PE blade. This leaves the edge stronger and less likely to drift in a cut.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Thanks guys.
I did it 1:1, with the 'washboard' speed and got a very nice edge on it. Much better then it was before.

sc_rebel1957,

Thanks, that looks like a good 'outdoor' sharpening kit. I'll try to find one here in the Netherlands.
