Somehow someone in Ireland got my Debit card number and ran a $800 charge to my account. The bank reimbursed my charge, which was easy to prove I didn't do since I don't have a passport and was still in Atl, GA. I had to destroy my Debit Card which was about the only high light and stress relief I got when I put about 10 rounds of .45 through it.
I don't have any credit cards and this was my only Debit card, so having to run to the bank constantly to get cash and checking all of my credit reports was a pain. It could of been alot worse but it is still aggravating when you personal information is messed with.

I would not be too upset, consider yourself very lucky you got reimbursed and did not have to pay $800,next time, keep a good eye on your debit card and watch for people double swiping it and necer let it leave your site when using it during a purchase.

It's more safer to have a credit card vs. a debit card. If your credit card number gets stolen, you'll know it when you get the bill. At this point, you're not out any money and the only thing to do is contact the card provider to cancel the charges and the card. Debit equals INSTANT withdrawal from your checking/savings. Trying to get every charge back will be more of a hassle and plenty of trips to the bank. I use only credit cards and avoid debit cards all together. I prefer to see what my charges are BEFORE I make any kind of payment whereas debit can clean your account out before you discover your card number was stolen.

This, sir, is a most excellent way of destroying something! :D Thank God this incident didn't cost you.

You can do all of that, and more, and still not be able to stop a card number from being compromised. Sometimes it's just plain old bad luck that your number is among the ones they randomly hit.

Somebody used my credit card number to charge repeated USD$58 amounts to different companies at different locations overseas, none of which I knew.

My bank rang me after the SECOND transaction in successive days cos they had a third one waiting to be put thru. Obviously the amount being the same on successive dates sets the alarms ringing as does the fact they are all outside of Australia..........they cancelled the credit card on Xmas Eve. No big deal or inconvenience for me as I don't use it for much and have it more for very occasional travel reasons.

My new card should be here tomorrow (I hope!)............;)

That happened to my credit card once. I'm pretty sure it was stolen when I used it to pay some medical bills.

Looks like someone had some and profit. They bought some gas, took a road trip to Texas and ate some dinner at a steak house. Then withdrew about a 1000 bucks from a cash machine in the joint.

Not sure how it all worked out, but I suspect the "steak house" was in on it.

Luckily no charges to me.

Yup it's a bummer when or if it happens..........

One thing I found strange though is that my Bank was happy to cancel my card after checking with me BUT would not deduct the amounts straight away. I have to wait for my Monthly bill to appear and then ring the help desk and challenge the amounts........he said it should then be deducted no probs but seems a wee bit long-winded of an approach after they rang me to warn me! ;)

BRIAN

Procedures for disputes can vary from bank to bank, company to company. Additionally, they will apply debits and credits to your account in the manner most advantageous to them, not you. So even if you could have gotten a positive adjudication of your dispute right away they could still take the maximum allowable time (maybe 72 hours, for example) to actually reimburse you.

I was charged $3000 for two airline tickets to the Middle East on my debit card!

The bank took care of it, but it took several days and all of the other stuff that you have to do to get it fixed. The bank had no idea how it happened, but they gave me the impression that it happens all of the time-regularly.

Evidently, the perpetrators have number generators to generate account numbers until they find ones that will work and then they start charging on them. Lucky, I have a flag on my accounts that send me an email when any charges are over a certain amount and I was able to shut down the account before they sucked my account dry.

I live in AZ and the charge originated from Florida and the tickets were to Abu Dabi.

We got caught up in a scam. We ordered a snack making machine that we had watched on a tv info commercial. When we got our credit card bill there was a charge on it for $19.95 Monthly fee for some company we had never heard of. I called the snack making machine company and they denied that they had anything to do with the charge. The snack machine company automatically puts this charge on all the credit/debit cards they have had good luck in collecting the monthly fee. We cancelled the order for the snack machine. For three months we got charged for the monthly fee. We contacted the credit card company right away and got the charges removed. But it was like a nightmare for awhile. I searched the internet and found a place that other people had put their experiences with the same company on the web site. They said their debit/credit card company would not do anything about the charge and they had to keep paying the monthly charge until they cancelled their credit/debit card. It made us really mad that a scam like that can go on an on and not be stopped.
