This majestic avian predator roosts atop a telephone pole at the bottom of which is something that makes this a comical picture when seen uncropped. The full photo will be posted later.

Pic taken near Klamath Falls close to the Oregon/California border last weekend.

I've seen BEs feeding on waterfowl several times and a deer carcass once but never a small bird such as might dwell in the house on the pole. However, if I were the small bird the eagle would give me pause.

A sleepy owl (pic taken just down the road from the one above).

K-Falls is on the western flyway and hosts a million birds each year. Most of the open water I visited was frozen solid. Less than 5% of the water was open and some of that could be attributed to the geothermal stuff found in that neck of the woods.

Mt. McLoughlin (9k+ ft. high, a peak in the Southern Oregon Cascade Mtns. seen from the high desert of Eastern Oregon (looking west) near the northern end of North Klamath Lake):

Nice and pointy isn't it. There is room at the tippy top for only a few people. During the summer the sound of rockfall is near constant on its steepest sides. I was up it twice (southern route is just a hard hike), both times during the dead of summer, and can still remember this young and enthusiastic Japanese student who insisted that he have his photo taken with all present.

Crater Lake is just a bit due North of this volcanic peak.

Thank you kindly JaM.

I think that it is the fearless (kills skunks and porcupines and has the nickname "Flying Tiger") Great Horned Owl, 20-25" (50-63cm). I smelled a skunk when that pic was taken. The ear/horn tufts of feathers have nothing to do with hearing. But, it can hear a mouse move under a foot of snow.

This is the second GHO that I've seen in person. The first one I saw was held by the hand of volunteer who was aiding Harry Nehls, a respected author of birding books, as the volunteer entered the Portland Audubon Society building in which I just happened to be milling around. All conversation stopped, my jaw dropped and I took a few moments to resume whatever I was up to. It is a huge bird and presents itself in a warrior manner even while perched.

What is the scenery like in Sask vampyrewolf?

Ront. I got lucky with this young (only a few years old, note the black spots on the white head) eagle. I was able to walk right up to the bottom of the pole and took about 75 photos while a couple cars/trucks drove by. The light was good because the sky was clear and the sun was fully up.

The only time that I was closer to a BE was on the last day of this trip when we drove up to one sitting on a 5ft high metal fence post above a deer carcuse that it did not want to leave to, what looked like a Golden Eagle and a vulture, in the ditch. It only flew away as a truck drove by it. Unfortunately, my camer's chip needed to be reset and the intended movie did not happen...

I took over 500 photos Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I like (aka they turned out OK) maybe 20.

Miles of rolling hills... you know the jokes about seeing your dog run away for 3 days?

So, you want to live here. Huh. Even visiting has its challenges. Case in point: Silver Lake, a tiny town, a far piece from anywhere:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b188/oregun/P1150225.jpg

The one gas station was closed, the miniature store was closed and the motel looked blacked out. No services. However, I stumbled upon a place to eat I've only read about, the Cowboy Dinner Tree via signs on the edge of Silver Lake (there is no lake, just a dirt basin):

Sign at the driveway:

This is it:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b188/oregun/P1150215.jpg

Unfortunately, we arrived way too early for dinner and left after greeting the friendly dog w/o any dinner so I can't speak to the service or food but word has it that it is good.

The was a bit of freezing fog that had preceeded our arrival so some portion of the plants had a white frosty covering you might be able to make out in the photo.

Here is a link to a review of this restaurant: http://www.chuggnutt.com/2006/07/17/cowboy_dinner_tree_review.html

OK, okay I will upload something just for you vampyrewolf. Uh huh. Oh yes. Wait for it.

The Coot. Can't really tell if its an old Coot but I gotta love those eyes. They look just like I feel.

A long shot out onto one of the Klamath Fall's area lakes of a Bald Eagle. There was another BE out on the ice about a mile away, and there could have been another even farther away on the ice surrounding a large flock of mixed ducks and geese. There was also a BE in the tall grass on the other side of the flock of prey.:

A chilly scene of winter, large frozen lake, in the Klamath area, burrrrrr:

Here is a shot I took over the handle bars of my recumbent bike, this is about 5 miles outside Saskatoon where both vampyrewolf and I reside. This was taken last fall. Just to give you guys a taste of our scenery (or lack of scenery?) :D

One thing about it... When's the last time anyone outside of the province could see their destination from the driveway? :p

If it wasn't for the snow banks and drifts, we've have nothing in the way.

You were talking about the other guy right? Cause if you want to see a flat piece of grass you can always look at your lawn. :D Okay, Saskatchewan does have some cool scenery, you just have to know where to look for it. Like here for instance:

You Saskatoon folk need intervention: put the steamroller down:)

Perfect recumbent riding because of the flats. How do you know when you've arrived?

I blame your photo alone for my ordering pancakes for breakfest and spoiling my diet.

With a good telescope you could probably see the back of your head from there.

Thank you for the pics.

The Prairies, "where God went crazy with the steamroller" :D. It is ideal terrain for recumbent riding, my bike works well going into headwinds and no hills to speak of.

ahhh.. Saskatoon... visited a girl I used to talk to ALL the time up there once.. .In January. Perhaps not the best time to go 2000 miles north and west :) But it was fun, and while it was cold, it was not that bad. She lived on a farm bout 45 minutes away from the city proper, so at that point it was a lot like around here, farmland, everywhere.

This is the last place I would willingly go in freaking January! I was working Jan. 11th outside, the temp outside that morning was -41 celcius, that is without windchill, with the windchill it was -57 celcius. That will wake you up in a hurry. :D

Gotta love living in the one place that goes from -40c to 40c over the year... without counting the wind.

I see that concentrated evil sky in your photograph and I mutter a solemn oath while my heart rate goes up. Just from the pic.

You, on the other hand, take a well constructed photograph with a steady hand. I owe you half a beer.

My Grandmother was from Kansas. After putting her where she wanted to go we visited the home of her old timey neighbors. They showed us a steel culvert, in their nice basement, which led to a cement bunker well underground. Strong people in your neck of the woods.

Thank you for the pic.

That is an awesome picture! I've only seen twisters on the ocean, just small ones, never something like that. I know it sounds funny, but I would love to go on one of those storm chasing tours.
