Hello all,

This is my first post on the Spyderco forum. Been active over on KF, BF, and BMF, just not the Spydie forum.

I have always been impressed with the products from Spyderco. The ones I have had have always been first rate. The only complaint I have, and this is not exclusively for Spyderco, is that I feel these companies are going to too great a length to lighten their knives! I just think that some of the larger knives like the Wegner, Military, Goddard, and some others would benefit from double liners. I like the added weight and the extra strength they would have to gain.

With that said, I have always liked the Spyderco Wegner. This is the one model that stands out in my mind as heavy duty. I thought I would just have to fantasize about a pair of liners until I called Tim Wegner at Blade-Tech. Blade-Tech offers a Phil Boguszewski trio. One has full ti handles, another one has black micarta handles with a single liner, the third and one I got has two, yes count them, two liners! This is a super knife on first impression. Thick double titanium liners, green canvas micarta handles, a tip down pocket clip, some serious lockup, and overall fantastic fit and finish make this a knife well worth the money. Of course comming from the workshop of Phil Boguszewski you would expect all the above!

I know this is the Spydie forum and I have been bragging on a custom knife, but just felt that the post belonged here.

Hi Art. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Regarding double liners. Sometimes they provide advantages, sometimes not. Light weight has advantages for a knife that is carried daily, especially a large kife. The extra weight becomes uncomfortable after a while.

Micarta handles with linerlocks require two liners as the micarta moves and changes the liner position on the tang. I learned this originally from Phil B. We also experienced the problem in the past. G10 is stable so the 2nd liner is redundant.

In our testing, we have not found double liners to be stronger than nested liners. Nested liners prevent the liner from moving. with double liners that are not nested, the only stability to prevent bending comes from the pins.

The first Wegner had two liners. Tim said it was too large and too heavy.

Twin titanium liners are OK, but one steel liner is as strong as two ti liners.

On the MBC pieces, we'll go double liners becuase of the need for a very high ultimate lock strength. Sometimes they're exposed, like the Gunting and the Chinook, and sometimes nested like the Lil' Temperance.

We do make many styles becuase we recognize that differences in likes & dislikes.

Sal,
Thanks for the response. What you say makes sense and coming from someone who knows what they are talking about makes it doubly so! I'm just an old traditionalist who likes double liners on his knives. It is more pleasing to my eye and appears symmetrical. I must admit that the Spyderco's I have had and used with a single liner have NEVER offered to have a problem. As for weight, I am a big ole' fella that don't mind an extra ounce or two. This is why I prefer the double liner.
Now, at the risk of getting my nose a bit brown, I just want to say that I have collected several brands of knives over the years. This includes Benchmades, MOD's, customs, Spyderco's, Microtechs, and some others. I am a MT fan, big time, but have to tell you that I think Spyderco makes some of the best using knives in the world! The custom collaborations, especially the Wegners, Viele, and Chinook are OUTSTANDING knives! The Military is also first rate,( still would like to see double liners on that one!) The Starmate and Lum also seem to be super knives. I have only picked these up at gun/knife shows.
Again, thanks for the explanations. It means a lot when the head man gets on the keyboard to answer questions!

Thanx for the kind works Art. Appreciated.

If we go with the comression lock on the Military, you will have dual liners, but I'll still nest them like the Lil' Temperance. Nesting is stronger (albeit considerably more expensive) than leaving the liners opened. When nested, they won't appeal to your eye, but your confidence will know they're there.

I just got a custom Wegner with the single liner. I really like it. It is a nice knife. Very lightweight. Getting the custom shows how good a job Spyderco did on the production version.

I also just ordered the custom version with two liners. I was planning on carrying the dual liner version, but Tim Wegner informed me that only six were made in 440-V. three were green and three were black. The other dual liners will be BG-42. Since there are only three more like my dual liner, I don't believe I'll carry it.

I guess I'll continue carrying my Spyderco. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Now I need to get the fixed blade version.
