I have been studying for a Lt's test for awhile and i have a ton of documents all with their own heading or file i guess you would call it...i would like to make a copy all of them into one giant file so i can do a quick search for something instead of opening 40 files one after another looking for a particular thing. is there a way to do it? i just have the free adobe program. thanks.

You should be able to put them all in one folder. And access them all from there.

If you have all the files in front of you on your screen, then create a new folder then take all those drag them over to the new folder and they will go in.

You would have to open each file separately then drag that file ove into the folder you want to put it in.

Hi Tony.
Unfortunately, the Adobe Reader can't merge pdf files. The Adobe Acrobat is the one who lets you open and modify .pdf files. But it's hard to work with, and not very cheap.

What I'd do, would be converting those pdf's to Microsoft Word document (assuming you are using Microsoft Word).
For this, I'd use an online converter, it is simple and free (for instance: http://www.freepdfconvert.com).
All I'd have to do next would be opening all those .doc files and merging them together. You will still have the search function and more, you can edit the document according to your needs.

You might try this program: http://majorgeeks.com/PDFCreator_d6049.html

If I understand correctly, you want to merge PDF files. There are several 3rd party apps available that will do it in addition to a full Acrobat Reader program.

thanks i tried it but some of the files arent the clearest to begin with and once it went into WORD it was blurry as hell.

good program but this one took about 15 minutes to get one file ready (618 pages) and then it came to a picture that it couldnt convert and it gave me an error:( i probably have over 4K of pages of stuff that the test questions could come from:mad::mad::mad: so it looks like i will just have to do it the old fashioned way:o

thanks everybody for trying

What might work is to use Adobe's online conversion service (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/access_onlinetools.html) to convert each file from PDF to HTML, then you could set up an index for all the HTML pages, sort of a web site, but local on your computer.

Or, for ten bucks they might be able to merge them into one PDF file for you...

http://createpdf.adobe.com/?Language=ENU

Not sure if that's a good idea or not, might be one mother-big file.

Here you go Tony. How about copying the contents of each PDF into a Word document. I don't know how large the PDFs are but it doesn't matter. Just use the copy function to move the text to Word. Then, open the next PDF and copy its contents to the same Word document. Just keep doing this until you have one big word document containing the content of the forty PDFs.

Then, you can print this document to a new PDF and you're off to the races. This should work. I've done the same thing myself.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I'll give you my cell number and walk you through it.

Bill

thanks but after talking with Paul...and figuring out the total document would be about 3500 pages and it would just be too damn big to load plus going back and forth between word and pdf just made everything blurry as all hell...thanks to everyone for the advice.

Install Google Desktop and make sure it's set to read PDF files. Give it enough time to index all the files on your hard drive (overnight should do it), and then use Google Desktop to search for terms in documents on your local drive... just as you use Google to search for terms on the Internet.
