View Full Version : Lubrication
What is yall's preferrd lube for your spyder knives...What seems to work best?..Thanks.Also, the metal clip on my Endura seems to work its way loose from time to time...any suggestions other than continously tightning it up?...Seems this will only make the situation worse with time.

In the shop, we prefer Ballistol, but many of our customers enjoy White Lightning Multi-tool lube. Just try to avoid WD40 as it drys up too quickly. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> As for you clip, I agree with gunandtackle, drop some loctite in the threads before fastening tightly. Hopefully this helps, if not contact our warranty and repair department and see if the can help ya out. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

I use Militec-1
I use WD-40 simply because I have nothing else, but as soon as I get my paintball gear from home I'll give my knives some good TLC.
If you're not working around food, any reasonably clear, viscous oil will work. Prevention of wear is the key, not necessarily freedom from all friction (oils do have friction, the oil just moves against itself rather than letting the parts rub). For my paintball gun, which certainly has the oomph in its internal parts to overcome a thicker oil, I use either Hoppes' #9 (available at K-mart, Wal-mart, or the like, or any gun shop), or Gold Cup airgun oil. Both of these will not gum over time, nor will they eat or corrode polymers (like the O-rings in my gun, or the FRN handle of your lightweight folder). They are also remarkably temperature-resistant. Using CO2 tanks, which store the gas in liquid form under pressure, the inside of the gun can get REALLY cold, especially if a valve fails, but neither oil has frozen or congealed (the CO2 just turns to dry ice, which locks up the gun)
For food-grade use, you have to be a little more discriminating. No petroleum-based lubricants. Someone said that mineral oil with a touch of lemon oil works well as a food-grade lubricant. A salad or light frying oil like soybean or cottonseed will work as well, but these can gum up over time and need care to avoid the oil becoming rancid. They can also turn to grease if it gets cold (but at work, I've put both of these into a refrigerator overnight at 35 degrees F and neither congealed).
As for the clip, the best thing would be some Loktite thread sealant, the kind that isn't permanent (I think it's blue). Just put a drop on the threads of the side where the threads aren't exposed when unscrewed, assemble the clip, and screw it down tight. If things are really bad, you may want a small spacer to increase the thickness of the handle, so the clip isn't still loose with the barrel screw fully tightened. The ghetto rig would be a piece of paper in the clip recess under the clip. Acetate (the stuff used to print transparencies) will also work if it's really loose, and it lasts longer, changing shape over time to fill all the little scratches and deformations in the clip well to be really secure.

To lock small screws or threads use Pipe dope or clear nail polish
if blue Loctite isn't available as both will work on the small stuff.
Just don't use red Loctite unless you NEVER want to dis-asssemble
that fastener again!!
The oil I've used for decades is plain ol' 3-in-1 household oil. Just
drop and away we go.

Hi Medic2110! Welcome to Spyderland! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
For lubricating a Spydie, I've always found good old Zoom-Lube to work best. It's a light oil, beige in color. One drop on my Endura in 6 months has sufficed.
To help the clip, there's a simple method that no one has mentioned.
Firstly, arrange the knife so that the SpyderHole is facing away from you and to the left (bolt end of clip on the right).
Using a coin or screwdriver, take off the clip. Notice that a washer is present on the side of the knife where the clip rests. Simply take the bolt and invert it.
Reassemble the knife so that the clip and that washer are on opposite sides of the handle. That should cure any porblems you have! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I love the Sentry line of products. A few drops of Tuf-Glide on the joints and mechanism followed by a wipedown with Tuf-Cloth. Take a look at it http://www.sentrysolutions.com/products.html

PS: Based on a long-ago thread I will also be trying Militec.
Thanks guys for all the helpful advice. I started carrying a Spyderco several years back (it was a SE Lightweight Delica with FRN clip)It has since been replaced by a new VG10 SE Endura-luv that VG10.The Delica was passed on to a former partner of mine who was desperately in need of a good EDC knife for work.

I use Breakfree most of the time, but here lately I've been trying Miltech, and I'm quite pleased with it. RKBA!

Your "signature" seems offensive. Like, do you want to cut us up into little pieces? Is that funny? IMO try something more positive.

Speaking of Ballistol...does ANYONE in the Knoxville Tenn. area know a place to buy Ballistol?

I use Breakfree CLP aerosol and a toothpick for cleaning and Militec-1 for lube and storing.
And I agree that the Pink Floyd quote is inappropriate in this forum. Maybe its taken out of context, butt it conveys a message that I'm pretty sure Spyderco doesn't want associated with their products. IMO

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm surprised at such a personal attack. The line is about cutting an audiotape into many little pieces and resplicing them to mix metaphors into a confusing message. Sorry if anyone is offended. I'll give up the signature if everybody votes against it. I didn't think this thread was the place for this, but hey! Anybody? Sal, what do you think? My next if this goes on will be on another thread.
Jaxon
I'm a fan of a lot of Pink Floyd's music, and therefore am not offended. Taking offense at lyrics is for artists.
Ballistol is medical-grade, used as a field dressing in addition to a waterproofer oil for wood and a military-grade lubricant for metal parts (guns, knives, field equipment). I'm assuming this makes it food-grade as well. Anyone care to confirm or deny? Should it get in food, does it taste bad? Is there anything that works better/lasts longer? Does the fact that it's biodegradeable mean that it breaks down and loses its effectiveness faster than other lubes?

Hi there,
I always use Ballistol for all my knives. Would say, that it is simply the best & its recommended by all manufacturers here in Germany. Besides that its not to expensive.
You all take care, "upnorth"
