It looks like some kind of grip tape, I once bought a Spyderwrench that had some on the handle but took it off. It did help with the grip and was nice and soft; probably some sort of 3M product.

Another of the more unusual Spydies, a one without the hole, the Ramco/Laguiole..............info that follows is from Sal and Joyce via thread here by David/4 s ter............

Spyderco Laguiole

Spyderco produced a Laguiole "style" knife about 8 years ago. It was a front lock folder designed by Dennis LeMaire. We produced it in Seki. Steel was GIN-1. We designed our own "bee" for the traditional look. Quality was excellent. Came in Plain or serrated. Custom made leather sheath also had the "bee" embossed on the sheath.

It was/is IMO the best quality Laguiole ever to hit the market. We actually lost quite a bit of $ in the project.

Dealer support wasn't there and the model was dropped. One of the Spyderco crew just purchased one of the remaining pcs at the last Spyderco "Crew sale" last week.

They were, however, quite expensive. As I remember, Over $130 retail + sheath.

Denis Lemaire was an creative French Canadian cutlery designer, maker, and friend of Spyderco. In the early '90s Spyderco made a French-style Laguiole model which Denis had engineered and designed. He was adept at producing innovative concepts and was well-acquainted with French influenced cutlery designs. A folder named the AKMA was one of his inventions and is produced today by Florinox Cutlery of Thiers, France.

The Spyderco Laguiole debuted as a high-tech version of a time-honored design. It featured:

~ A front lock (developed by Al Mar and Harvey McBurnette), the first ever lock-back Laguiole
~ A handle of black Micarta with brass liners
~ Blade steel was G-2
~ The traditional Laguiole "bee" found its' appearance underwent a subtle, buggy make-over
~ Notably absent were the Spyderco round hole and a pocket clip
~ Notably present, Spyderco serrations
~ It came with a tooled leather belt sheath
~ Spyderco's French design was manufactured under the Ramco label in Seki City, Japan
The Laguiole was discontinued in 1995-1996 and the MSRP at that time was $119.95, the sheath $19.95.

Strange knife, a French design, Americanized with serrations and made in Japan....

Personally, as ever, I would love to see this model repeated in Burgundy........;)

The Cost factor is a problem BUT I have to say at this point that I believe there is a market for high-priced Spyderco designs, especially unique ones like this, IF Production runs can be economically limited to 200-250 units at USD$250-300.00 price.

The Client/Collector base is strong enough as evinced by some of the threads here.

The prototype Goddard/Spyderco folding knife was delivered to Sal Glesser during May 1990. The first production models were delivered November 1991. These C-16 knives came with black Micarta handles and full serrated or partially serrated blades. The full serrated blade was discontinued in 1996.

The C-18 "Junior" Goddard prototype was delivered to Spyderco in April 1992. The first production models of the "Junior" Goddard Clipit were made in November 1992. It was available with full serrated or 50-50 edge. The full serrated blade was discontinued in 1996.

The "Baby" Goddard (C-22), key chain size folder, was the brainchild of Seki, who had made a couple of prototypes and sent them to Spyderco. When Spyderco showed them to me I realized that they were not to scale. I reworked the design, bringing it into the right proportions and sent my pattern knife to Spyderco in November 1992.

Spyderco shipped the first "Baby" Goddard Spyderco folders in June 1993. It is made only with the 50-50 edge blade. It is a key-chain-sized knife and does not have the Clipit clothing attachment clip. The last Micarta handled Goddard in production was the Baby, C20PS. It was discontinued in November 2001.

Man do I love the look of the Matriarch and the Civi :eek:

They are such freekin awesome scary lookin knives :eek: When you hold the Civilian in your hand, you kinda giggle and say "Dude... this thing is pretty freekin cool" :rolleyes:

You should go get yourself a pair. (Check Knifeforums, I think one of the :spyder: forum regulars is looking to trade his Matriarch)
