With the Academy Awards having been passed out yesterday and my top pick, Slumdog Millionaire, taking home eight awards (including Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, and Adapted Screenplay), I was wondering what great movies you have seen lately.

Probably the best film I have seen in the last few weeks is The Wrestler. It's a sad story of a professional wrestler who, having passed the peak of his career, is reduced to signing autographs and hocking VHS copies of his past fights. He is broken down, can't afford his rent, his daughter hates him, and he has very few friends. The real world doesn't want him and the only place he fits in is in the ring. I won't give away the ending, but will say I was kind of disappointed with it at first. After some contemplation, however, I've concluded that it ended perfectly and I wouldn't want it any other way. Go see this movie if you haven't yet!

Righteous Kill with Al Pacino and Robert Deniro. Best movie I've seen in a while. One of the few that I actually liked enough to buy the DVD.

If, like me, you're late to the party and haven't seen The Usual Suspects, I highly recommend it. Just saw it for the first time on Blu-ray.

I also thought Taken was quite good.

It's one of the best I've ever seen.

Other than that, I haven't seen many good movies lately.

Checkout Jerome Bixby's The Man from Earth. If you aren't offended by fictitious religious themes I would say it is one of the best movies I have seen this year.

I am a huge movie buff, it's one of my other time wasters other then Knives, poker, and homemade beer so I see a lot of movies.

What impressed me about this movie is how a very good script and character dialogue with a great story does not need much else. If you check it out you will see what I mean.

This movie would seem more appropriate to Sci-fi fans or relative "nerds" in general. I figure that should not be a problem. I see being a Knife Kuts as just another type of nerd. Hopefully that does not offend anyone. I have come to embrace the term nerd, so it does not offend me.

If you haven't checked out MST3K: Manos, the Hands of Fate, then you should. It is probably my favorite episode of the series.

Burn After Reading was surprisingly good. There is a twist about half way through that left me staring with my mouth agape.

Grand Torino, is the best, which I saw in a while.
I am extremely disappointed that this movie was not nominated on Oscar

I saw Gran Torino the other week, it was excellent!

I didn't think it was eligible for a nomination this year, because it was released after the cut off date. I could be wrong, but it was so good I would expect it to be nominated for at least Best Picture and Best Director.

I went on a little MST3k buying spree lately, and that was one of the ones I got :D

(it was in the box set along with Santa Claus Conquers the Martians-my gf loved that movie before she knew there was an MST version :D)

That is true. It was released too late. One critic on TV said that Warner brothers delayed release, counting on Dark Knight to get rewards. :(

Actually, it just got snubbed. It received a "limited" release on Dec. 12th, and then expanded wide on Jan. 9th. This is typical for studios because they can release a movie in one or two theaters just before 2008 ends (qualifying it as a 2008 release), but then releasing it wide so that it peaks (buzz-wise as well as dollar wise) right around voting time. Since it's in the theaters and on people's minds at voting time, they hope that it will get more votes.

I thought the movie was great, despite some uneven moments in the screenplay, and it should have been up for best director and actor. Eastwood's character is exactly the crotchety old curmudgeon that I aspire to be when I'm his age.:D

Speaking of Eastwood, I just saw Changeling last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I saw Valkyrie the other day and thought it was decent.

Watching the documentary The Corporation on DVD in bits and pieces. Quite fascinating.

Watched Jack Black's Nacho Libre for the first time last night. Not super funny, but still entertaining, in a Jack Black, weird kinda way.

Just finished The Lord of the Rings trilogy special edition, again, and this time I found the secret hidden videos. Hilarious! :)

Just saw "The Wrestler" and I can't recommend it enough (Mickey Rourke was an idol of sorts when I was younger).

If he's as good in The Wrestler as he was in Barfly, then I'm definately adding that to my Netflix cue.

I just saw Son of Rambo and thought it was pretty funny (British movie).. I think because I had adhd like that when I was a kid:p

Death at a Funeral is also HILARIOUS! The British make some very funny movies!

Movie I want to watch is Where the Wild Things Are. I loved that as a child and can't wait until it's out.. going to be a lot of reminiscing on the good 'ol days:(:D

I watched an American Crime a few weeks ago and I have to say it's the most depressing movie I have ever seen in my life. It's really an ass whipping just getting through it. Not saying it was bad...just very dark and sad.
