What is it?

Why is it there/Does it serve a purpose?

What does it do?

Or is it there just for looks?

The lanyard hole is just that. It allows you to put the knife on a cord or necklace instead of using the clip. On the larger models, it's pretty much just for looks, but on the smaller ones (Mouse, Toad, Ladybug, Dragonfly, even the Calypso Jr), it can have some use.

Ahhhh ok <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Thanks, I was wondering because I saw a site saying that it was added for extra strength or something.

KK- The laynard loop is mainly used in Military applications. Usually the item is secured to a persons body. I think it goes back to the Cavalry days so the rider would not lose weapons. On most civilian items it is for asthetics. rr

Two main reasons.
I have a cord fob on my Mouse (like Chris Reeve's Sebenzas) to increase the effective length of the handle and make fishing it out of deep pockets easier.
The other type is the proper lanyard which is basically a cord or leather loop that fits around the fist or over the wrist to prevent the knife falling if your grip slips.

The only time the lanyard hole adds to the stregnth is when it is doubled up as a spacer to the handle, as seen on the Military. The more common type (hole drilled through the handle scale) can only take away from the strength, but not enough to notice.

Ah. It CAN give extra strength. On some lightweights where handle strength is still an issue, the lanyard hole can be reinforced with a metal tube to strengthen the butt end of the handle. This means that liners (which add to the weight and cost of the handle) don't have to run the entire length of the handle, or they can be eliminated entirely.

I always thought the lanyard hole had two uses. I have bought used knives that have been used for that secondary purpose.
