Which one is better? I have heard alot of about both. I know that vg-10 is a little cheaper. Does that figure into the overall liking of the steel. Thanks

All I know is...

VG-10 can get real sharp real fast
CMP-440V can be sharp for a long time, and is hard to sharpen it

That's what I have picked up from this forum so far

As a general rule of thumb I prefer VG-10 for fine cuts and CPM-440v for rough cuts.
VG-10 for string and paper, 440v for cardboard and rope.

Both great steels, you can't go wrong with either.

IMO, the difference is between inside use and outside use knives. VG-10 is harder, shinier, and in general looks better than 440V. It takes and holds an edge well, but because of its hardness, doesn't work as well in super-heavy use. 440V is harder to finely sharpen, but it holds the edge very well even in hard use. So, it's best for a ripping edge that makes hard cuts, but not as well suited for lighter duty precision cuts unless the blade is very well-maintained.
