Has anyone ever handled one? I am thinking of picking one up off the internet

what is it... a lever action? what are you planning on using the gun for, and where?
i handled one of the newer marlin lever actions in 45-70 a couple weeks ago... pretty awesome gun, with a great fit and finish. no grizzlies on my island, though, so no real reason i'd need something that intense. plus, pretty expensive ammo... even more expensive than the 7mm rem mag ammo my savage 116 takes.

They're good for the price. I wouldn't pay over $350 for one though. Especially if it's used. If money isn't an issue....save a little more and get a Savage.

i paid the extra for a savage, and don't regret it one bit. :D marlin makes some great guns, too, though...
or just get anything durable and comfortable that shoots straight, and invest more in the scope... :D

Marlin is $290 and Savage is $310:eek:
It's bolt action. Mainly target practice and I don't know about hunting. I already have two 30-06 for that:) Not really sure about the comfortable/ durable part since I am buying off the internet.

i'd say... go and see if there's one you can check out "in-person," to see if you like the feel... then go for the dice roll on the internet gun. if the description is accurate and the seller is reliable, there shouldn't be any "surprise" deviations from the gun you handled in-person.

They are both new. So I went to my gun store to check if they have either one in stock. That's when I saw a .308 with a 1 1/2 foot scope with a diameter of about 4 1/2 inches (didn't check brand) and a Harris bipod. They let me look out the window with it at the hillside about 2.5-3 miles away and I could see birds sitting on a tree branch and cows that seemed like they were 50 meters away from me. I think I am going to pass on the .270's and get the Mossberg .308 since it's a pretty good price for it being brand new:D

Everyone should have a 45-70 it keeps the grizzlys out of the yard here in indiana;)

I agree with others have asked as to its intended use. If you already have a 30/06 the 270 Winchester is kind of redundant. The .308 might be a better choice since there are so many bullet weights available.
If you target shoot the 308 should be very versatile. Start reloading and you can load "target" rounds as well as regular rounds.

I changed my mind again:cool: Now I am deciding between a Howa 1500 .270 and a Remington 700 SPS Varmint .308:rolleyes:

i'm curious about how 270 would do against black bear. too much of a gamble? any bear hunters with any thoughts?

My brother shot a Black bear years ago with a 270 in Alaska . This caliber is considered marginal in Alaska but shines elsewhere . My Dad used nothing but a 300 H&H and bro upgraded to a 300 Weatherby , they both served well and are still keep on ticking . If I go back for a hunt in the future it will be with my 358 Win. Browning Lwt BLR . Marlin 4570 is a great short range brush rifle , it is a favorite of mine when hunting Deer in Missouri . MG2
