How long do you guys think is too long to wait for a knife purchased on E-Bay? Pachucks

I would say that it depends. Ideally, you paid via paypal, and the seller mailed your knife the following business day, you should get it within the week, probably less.

If you're concerned, I suggest you contact the sell and find out what's going on.

I paid for knife via PayPal the day the auction ended, 1-27-02. Seller says his girlfriend sent the knife to the wrong address and it was returned, and that he mailed it again on 2-6-02. Seller hasn't replied to my last two e-mails requesting an update. Its been 14 days since he says he mailed it the second time. Time to worry? What are my options? Pachucks

Pachuko,

1/27-2/6 is about 2 weeks. You may want to make sure they have your right address. Of course, any time they aren't repyling to your e-mails is a bad sign.

If you don't recieve the knife, you should have some recourse through your credit card company. This is merely my opinion.

Good luck,

Whatever you do, don't pay by personal check. You have to mail it to them, then they hold whetever you bought until it clears, usually for 7 to 10 days, then they mail the package to you. Of all the ways to pay, that takes the longest before you get what you bought.

I usually pay by postal or bank money order if they accept them, so the clear time is eliminated. Paypal or Billpoint are even faster. Once the money gets there and is clear, UPS Ground usually takes from 2 to 6 days. So, all in all, I'd get worried if the package hasn't come by 1 1/2 to 2 weeks after you send the payment.

What I usually do is ask the seller to send me an E-mail when he has recieved the payment, and another with the tracking number when he sends the package. That way, you can keep tabs on the transaction from start to finish with a minimum of hassle.

If he's gotten the payment other than a check, and the package isn't shipped in the next two or three days, there may be a problem with the seller.

Hope it turns out allright Pachucko.

My best record was just reciently, I bought a knife from a US auction and within 3 days of the money order arriving I had the knife arrive (UK).

I am not real happy about dealing with PayPal and with individuals since I know some people who got burnt.

I only purchase on eBay from people who have store fronts. I call in the payment and ask for quick delivery (two day shipping).

Seems like you have been waiting far to long for your purchase.

Hope all works out in the end. I would be pretty pissed waiting that long, would have assumed that the seller had the knife and wouldn't misship to the wrong address.

There is no question about my address, he has the right one. What are my options? If it becomes necessary; 1)check with the credit card company, ie. my bank, 2)next would be PayPal, 3)last would be E-Bay, right? I'm not too concerned with the time as I've been waiting to find one of these knives for a while anyway. What concerns me is the lack of a reply to my last 2 e-mails.

I have purchased appx 400 items on ebay. I typically request that I pay by check or money order. I do not mind the wait. You have to be ready to accept a loss. But out of all the transactions i have only been burned once for $45.00. So 99.75% have made it. I can live with that. I have had some US mail take 3 weeks or more. Rico

Pachucks,
You should have the right to dispute any credit card charge. If your card was charged and you never received the merchandise then you can write/call the credit card company and dispute the charge.
They may ask for documentation and <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> as always check you credit card agreement for specific terms. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Usually you have 60 days past the credit card statement date to start a dispute.
Good Luck

Pachuko,

I believe that paypal will be very interested in this. Don't they market their service as a &quot;safe&quot; way to go?

Good luck to you, in any case.

From what I can tell: 1st) Attempt reimbursement from your credit card company. If that doesn't work: 2nd) Attempt reimbursement from PayPal. If that doesn't work: 3rd) Attempt reimbursement from E-Bay. E-bay will charge you $25.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Apologies to the seller if something has happened beyond your control; accident, etc... I would appreciate a response to my e-mail queries, even if its a &quot;Ha,Ha, I really stuck it to you Pachucks.&quot; At least I would then have closure, not to mention evidence to send to my bank's fraud dept. Even if you get the money back from your credit card make sure to report the seller to ebay.I would hate to run into him later. Also if he had nothing to hide I would think he would respond to your emails,If you have his address try to get his ph # through information.

The Cool,
You may want to try swords.ca. I've seen him with auctions on E-bay. I purchaed a Q-knife from him and had no problems. I did use a credit card though.
If you have a VISA/MC credit card (most common in the US) you may want to try using that for foreign purchases. I have purchased items from Canada and the Credit card company automatically changes the currency. Example, if you purchase something for $50 USD the you would pay the correct amount in Pounds Sterling (35.30 at todays rate).
Good luck in the never ending pursuit of <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s

Folks,

www.swords.ca is the website for an outfit called &quot;Cutting Edge Cutlery&quot; here in Western Canada. They seem to have an excellent selection of Spyderco products many times stocking the discontinued items for awhile after they're unavailable elsewhere. Their prices are usually quite high in my experience, but perhaps not compared to what you would pay locally; depending upon where you are and will be shown in Canadian currency (currently worth about 63 cents U.S.)

Jeff/1911, Thanks for updating my info. I was looking for Q's so in US$ it ended up about $44 for me including shipping. Right now E-bay has one for &gt;$75 US. I really wasn't checking out the current knives.

I did notice a CF Dragonfly though <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Pachucko,

Definately contact Ebay and advise them of the problem. I have purchased many many things through Ebay with very little problems. Do not let the seller get away with ripping you off. You can also contact you local law enforcement, or that of the seller's home town and press criminal charges.

Linda

Also, contact Paypal, I believe that they can place a hold on his account, if he hasn't emptied it out yet.

This is mainly a &quot;TOP&quot; for Shrinky Dave.

Update: The one month mark has come and gone (three days ago) with no knife, no $, and no response to my queries from the seller. Today I sent a request to the fraud department of my bank's credit card services section that the transaction be investigated.

I am definitely a realist, but I still have faith in my fellow man (at least some of us). I would prefer not to post his names at this point. I will if further investigation proves I've been had. The seller does have one &quot;positive feedback&quot; posted on E-Bay, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while longer.

Note---My buddy was involved in a real estate transaction a while back, poof--the seller was gone, no communication, nada; about two months later he got a letter from the seller's executor, the seller had died in a vehicle accident, the transaction was completed with the heirs. Just goes to show you never know...

P.S. This seller does not have any auctions currently running (hes only had two to my knowledge, maybe three).

Final Update:

Over four months later--No knife.

Seller has never responded to communications (after the initial ones).

I did get my money back. I just filed a chargeback with my bank; its pretty simple actually. Your bank/credit card company will contact PayPal and they work it out. You give a statement (written letter) to your bank and its up to Paypal to refute it. They can't refute it, of course, if the seller will not respond to them either!

This seller now has negative feedback on E-Bay, imagine that.

I also got a nasty e-mail from PayPal. They do NOT want you to go to your bank with problems. Chargebacks cost them $$$, especially when they come from a credit card company. They want you to use their dispute settlement system first. I couldn't do this because I gave the seller too much time, and they (PayPal) have what I feel is a pretty short window to file complaints.

Anyway, lesson learned.

pachucks,
Glad to see it worked for you. The chargeback process is definitely built for the consumer. I wouldn't worry about PayPal, but I can understand their concern for cost. Our company usually processes &gt;400,000 chargebacks a month. And the cost to the company, not the consumer, can vary like fees at a bank. But suffice to say they could be being charged anywhere from $5-$50 for 1 chargeback.

I'd post the guy's ebay identification all over the web...just to make sure he doesn't do this to someone else. Be sure to let Ebay know....they log this type of negative things in...after two chances...ther're locked out of the system.

Sorry you had to go through the hassle, dude. Glad you got your money back. You've got a lot more patience than I. Lots of us shop E-Bay and would appreciate knowing who this seller is so we could avoid him.

I wouldn't worry about this guy anymore. Like I said, he now has negative feedback. Not too hard to miss. It seems he sold a couple of items for a few hundred bucks and went away. Lesson learned, don't send $150 to someone with no feedback!
