So I got a Leatherman Wave a few weeks ago and also got the side clip for it. I gotta say I am loving this thing. It has come in handy so many times where a knife would not be the appropriate choice.
All the tools lock into place and it has a locking bit that I can buy a collection of bits for. Does anyone EDC some type of multi tool and which one do you like?
Sorry for the crummy photo. Just snapped it with my phone.

Right now...
Spyderench on belt (2nd gen)
LM squirt E4 on my belt
vnox cybertool 29 in my pocket
LM surge in my vest
LM juice S2 on the shelf beside me
LM e302 on the shelf beside me, still have to get around to modifying the flat blade
LM charge ti on the shelf beside me
LM core is hiding on me (probably in one of 3 bags or on the shelf).
3x LM squirt in my storage (in gift tins)
notice a theme? :p
over the years I have had and lost or given away:
2 LM PST
2 LM sideclip
1 LM crunch
2 gerber recoil
1 LM minitool
3-4 LM micra
1 buck minitool
So pretty much any time you find me I've got at least 2 multitools on me. Usually I'll switch the one in my vest to match the extra tools to the job I have, between the core, charge, and surge.

I carry a Leatherman Charge TTi on a (n almost) daily basis. I love the thing. I wish I would've gone with the Surge in the first place, but hey, live 'n learn. :D

I've been carrying a Leatherman of one model or another almost as long as there have been Leathermans. The original Wave is my favorite by far, but I don't care for the new Wave at all, the screwdriver bits are too short.
Leatherman's warranty is second to none. I had a bunch of tools that I had managed to break through misuse/abuse over the years. When I e-mailed them to see if I could get them repaired for a fee, explaining that all the damage was my fault and shouldn't be considered warranty, their reply was "They're covered. Send them in." I sent in a whole box of damaged tools, and they repaired or replaced every one at no charge.
I've given away several of those refurbished tools as gifts, and the Wave on my belt right now is a refurb as well. I'd be lost without it.

I had a leatherman charge TI, it was a vary nice EDC, but when i finished school and started working every day, it was just too weak as a TOOL, so i soled it and bought a victorinox swisstool, this is by far the best multi tool i'v had/seen/handled.
i also have a victorinox nomad and a folding can opener (attached to a fire steel as a striker), in my cycling backpack.

I care a swisstool and one swisscard swisstool its very heavy compared with every other leathermann tool,i had one nice swisschamp with white scales limited edition but they cnfiscated me in airport...
My brother gave me a baby food pair. He uses his at work all the time. I have not used mine yet. I always have the right tool for the job. I guess the tool would be handy.

Does anyone else have experience with an SOG Powerlock?
I just got one yesterday because I was missing the Leatherman Skeletool that somebody took (I think I know who it was, but...). So far, I'm loving it, I managed to swap the radios between my cars with only the Powerlock and a Squirt E4. The Powerlock has a electrical crimper!
I've broken 2 sets of jaws on the slide-out Gerbers (both replaced very quickly for free) and lost confidence in it. It still sits around the house and gets used lightly on occasion.
I've tried Leatherman's, but I've never found one that works as well as my SOG Powerlock. It opens and closes fast and efficient, while the jaws are plenty strong for a multi-tool. The blades aren't the best, but I rarely use them for anything but scrapers since I always have a good knife (or a few) on me.

I carry these:
Leatherman Wave
Leatherman Skeletool CX
Leatherman Red Micra
Couple of Gerber Multitools
Right now I carry the Wave, Skeletool CX and Micra on a daily basis. The Gerbers stay in my vehicles. The Wave is awesome and has so many toold but it is quite heavy. I really like how light the Skeletool is but it is very limited on what tools it has.
I have been carrying the Micra for years and it's perfect for light carry. The Gerbers I really like since they are fast to deploy but I found that the jaws are a bit on the medium to light duty side.
I might have to look into the SOG Powerlock

I always carry a Leatherman Fuse at work. I work at a big box home improvement store and they come in handy all the time. Yeah, we sell all kinds of wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers, but who wants to walk across a 94,000 square foot store to grab one? Leatherman is on the job!

I like my SOG Powerlock, but the internal implements need some refining. I also don't care for the way the tools won't lock if one of them is pushed down too far into the handle. However, the plier jaws are just about the best out there.
It basically comes down to how much you use the pliers. If you carry a multi mainly for the pliers, but only use the internal implements on occasion, get the SOG. If you're like me and use almost everything in it, go for the Leatherman.
Overall, I prefer the Leatherman because 1) the screwdrivers are more versatile, 2) the Leatherman is easier to use with a screwdriver deployed, 3) there are no handle flaps to move, 4) there's no worrying about tools not completely locking, and 5) there is much play in the opened and locked tools.

I know the SOG isn't the best tool out there, but it seems to be a tank for the price I paid. I watched a "nutnfancy" review of it vs the Leatherman Charge TTI, and he voted for the TTI on every single talking point. However; The SOG is half the price (Or less).
I've never tried any of the top of the line leatherman's, and I'm sure they are top notch, but for $50 bucks, I am only amazed at the quality and power of the SOG.
I'm also unsure about whether or not to keep the little "Flappy handle covers", since they are so easy to pop off and the handle's about as comfortable without them, but even with them, it still seems easier to use than a Gerber flip out.
The tools I use most often in a multi-tool are the pliers, the cutters, and the screwdrivers. On the SOG, the pliers and cutters are top notch, but the screwdrivers are definitely questionable. The Skeletool was amazing for it's easy to use screwdriver and it's size/lightness, but the cutters and pliers seemed medium duty at best.
Also, I seem to be using the "V-cutter" on the SOG quite a bit :D

I like Leatherman tools as they have what I consider to be the best designed needle nose pliers when compared to other brands of full-size multitools. I also like the overall design and practicality of the Leatherman line of tools, and feel the individual tools inside the handles are well thought out.
I EDC the Leatherman Super Tool 200, the Leatherman Tool Adapter, the Leatherman Crunch, the Leatherman Skeletool, and the Leatherman Micra.
The Super Tool 200 is my favorite with tools having good reach for the jobs I've used it for. The Tool Adapter and its hex bits have come in handy and enhance the versatility of the Super Tool 200. The Crunch is great when there's a need for a set of locking pliers or a more robust set of pliers. The Skeletool is an excellent backup piece and beautifully designed. And, the Micra is great for its scissors.
I have the Leatherman Surge and the Leatherman Pulse that occasionally take turns on my belt when I need to bring along an extra, full-size Leatherman tool.
I also have the Leatherman PST in my brief case and two Leatherman Super Tools in the dresser drawer.

I have had a couple of gerbers. My current one I just popped the c clip off of and lost the button for the pliers release. I have had them since the late 90's with NO problems, I had a bluntnose version of the same, that I lost somewhere.
That said, Leatherman, great tools, Gerbers I've nerver had the slightest problem with until this button broke, SOG I really want to try the new pt-540's or 525's....
Played witha spyderrench a few times and the byrdrench, but it just didn't have the right feel for me.
I also have a micro and one of the small gerber pliers that I use a lot.

I broke both pairs of gerbers on the same bolt (different times).
We had equipment go down regularly with a jammed grommet. You had to pop the cover off and clear it. Popping the cover meant taking off a dozen bolts... so either grabbing the toolbox across the floor for either the sockets or wrench, or using a multitool.
Grab bolt, hold tight and push up. First time I did that and broke the pliers I was shocked. Grabbed the wrench and finished up. Next time I used my LM crunch and had no issues. Few weeks later it jams on me again and I had another of the slide out gerbers. Grab first bolt, push and SNAP it breaks again.
When I picked up a couple of the recoil a few years later they didn't see any heavy work and were given away because I didn't know if I could trust em for anything heavy.

yeah, all the newer gerbers I've looked at don't seem quite as beefy as my old ones. The ones on the right in your pic are the lighter duty, smaller brother of mine, it's been going strong for a decade, fixed cars, motorcycles, houses, cable, computers, swingsets, Bowling Pinsetters, Bowling ball returns... you name it. :)
I have looked so many times at the newer ones, because I'd like tools on the outside, but I just don't like the pliers, and I like the easy one handed opening for when I'm 25 feet up belted off to cable strand and need a pair of pliers to get a tough fitting loose.

i've broken the older ones (non-needle nose) also. if you check out my pic on page 1 of this thread, in the top left corner, is a Gerber Freehand. it is the largest Gerber multi-tool currently made. i love it, but it is just too bulky and rusts easily. that is the only Gerber i have not broke... yet. it is a beast.
i carried a Swisstool for about a month until i broke one of the handles. got it replaced and gave it away.
i like my SOG (i'm partial to SOG because i used their knives while in the Corps) but it's difficult to use one handed.
in my opinion, the best all around multi-tool is the Leatherman Surge. it is a lot of tool in a compact package. i also like the Wave, but it is a bit small for my [heavy duty] needs.

Yeah, that freehand is a MONSTER, I played with it up at Bass Pro Shops a couple months back. I like the looks of the SOG's, and I like the leathermans, I still like the ease of use of the gerber, but if I ever manage to break this one beyond repair, I am sure I'll end up in the comforting hands of a leatherman (well I already am since I have the skeletool now as well)

I've got another strong recommendation for the SOG Powerlock. I've beat on mine mercilessly and used it for juob it shouldn't have been used for and had no problems. Their CS is outstanding also.
I had Leatherman for about three hours before fouling the cutters on some fence wire, and Gerbers, are well Gerbers, it has been covered.
If you want tie gadgets, go for the LM, if you need something to rely on, get the Powerlock.

I carry a Leatherman Micra. It comes in handy, but will rust while you're looking at it. Simple solution is to buy a black sleeve for it. I have one. Seems to be made out of imitation leather, with "Leatherman" stamped along one side. Works great at keeping rust and dust away. I'll post a link to where I got mine from, if anyone is interested.
Without the sleeve, I wouldn't bother carrying it.

Hmmm...It appears to be a stripped down Skeletool. Interesting. I think of the Freestyle as a folding knife with a serious set of pliers, rather than a multitool per se. I'll have to ponder it a bit more. :D
EDIT:
It appears that Leatherman is now going to make the standard Skeletool with CE blade, and the CX with PE. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,10513.0.html
Leatherman Wave original at work - always using it in the kitchen, Leatherman Charge everywhere else, and Leatherman Juice CS4 around the house. The Wave was a gift from my wife (makes it more special :)) and I love it - it sees a ton of use - there are a ton of nuts, bolts, screws, things that need to be sawed (wood, padlocks), and on and on in a restaraunt. I will say that the serrated blade was retired when I got my Rescue 79mm, which I gave away when I got my Tasman SE :D.
- best wishes, Jazz.

I bought this BuckTool at the Camp Pendleton PX in 1996. It's been on my hip ever since. I know they're no longer made, and I know they've never gotten good reviews, but this has been a very faithful servant. I recently bought a Skeletool CX. I'ts nice, but I still haven't given it the "go ahead" over the BuckTool.

I'm blown away that there isn't any mention of the Victorinox Spirit! I have one and it sits on my belt every day. I hve an older LM Wave, a LM Sideclip and a squirt P4. The Victorinox blows them all away! The fit and finish as well as the engineering on this tool is amazing. It also doesn't have a standard knife blade which I like; MT knives never match up to the proper knife i'm carrying anyways.
I think anyone who really likes and uses multi tools should check out the Spirit.

I have a small collection of multi's as well. I did buy a Surge but sold it because it was too heavy for me. I did have a spirit as well and like the other vic tools it's nice because all the tools are accessible without having to opening it up. It's reasonably light. I ended up trading that one away with the ratchet set which btw is a really kewl addition to the spirit.
I carried both my Swisstool and my Leatherman Charge alx this weekend and they were both put to good use.

+2, exactly my thoughts. I almost bought a Leatherman Wave but didnt need the one handed knife opening. I really like my Victorinox Spirit and Caly 3 combo (and the Spirit's butter knife), overall it feels very solid and I wouldnt give a second thought on abusing it. Very handsome tool as well, just screams quality. Also have a Squirt P4, its good for "desk duty" and PC/laptop stuff.

Sorry, I don't have a SwissTool. I don't think I would really have a need for one either; my Spirit covers my needs just fine so something heavier-duty would be overkill.

Wow, very similar here. I had my wave for about 10 years before getting the Victorinox. I carry my Spirit on my belt every day with my ZDP/CF Caly 3 in my right front pocket. I swap the Caly 3 with one of my Fixed blade bark river knives when I'm doing any outdoorsy stuff.
Seeing as out EDC tastes are similar might I suggest checking out one of the Liteflux AAA lights? I have my LF2X in my pocket ever day.
Oddly enough I also have a P4 in my jacket with a peanut lighter attached.
Great taste in tools!

If you want to learn more about multi tools there is
http://forum.multitool.org/
great forum plus reviews. I have a number of multi's. Like mentioned above you cannot beat leatherman's warranties. I've also sent "broken" and useless pliers back and they have replaced them very promptly.
Sog pliers like someone mentioned above, I also find the tools a bit fiddly locking up at times. I have 3 powerlocks and if you snip metal wire quite frequently you will find these cutters wonderful with the compound leveraging system.
I did have a Leatherman Surge at one time but traded it off because it was just too heavy for edc.
Two of my favorite tools to carry is the Charge ALX, and the Juice S2.
I EDC a LM Juice SC2 in my pockets and a Victorinox Spirit in my EDC bag. Always backed up by 2-3 knives.

I have a hand full of LM inc Charge xTi and Wave. They are all great, functional and reliable tools.
I also have most of the other things listed here inc the Swisstool, a Gerber and even the venerable P38 (which is, as stated, very functional for ZERO carry weight/size)
I even have a pair of the Swiss+Tech tools (the one that looks like a key and the one that is a folded up pair of pliers). Even those are pretty good.
All of these do pretty much anything I've ever needed (I'm obviously not as hard on this gear as some of you folks are ;) but of the ones I've really used and carried most the xTi was my favorite) but currently, they are all (well, okay, not the P38 or the Swiss+tech) more than I want to carry these days...
Can anyone recommend a tool (I know there are a few out there) that is just a single machined piece? Usually referred to as a pocket pry bar type of thing? Often they are a wrench/wire stripper etc. Very minimalist in design. I keep looking but nothing has called out to me yet. I want something on a key ring. Very lightweight. Simple. Tough.
Thanks,
Ken

Check out the Atwood line of pocket tools. Very functional, very cool, very hard to get...http://www.atwoodknives.com/home/index.php

That's exactly what I was thinking of. Have you used them? How does one buy one??
Thanks!

There is a page on his site that describes how to buy. Basically, you have to check his blog to see what he is working on and when he expects to release. He posts a link when he releases something. They are usually gone in a couple of hours, so you have to be very motivated to get one. I just got my first one - Wingnut - and love it. I love this kind of tool. Check his blog, I think he might be releasing something end of the week. Good luck. His stuff is addicting.

Excellent timing, Bro!
He just posted S30V G3 Prybabies. I scored one!
Thanks!

Is that too big for a key ring? I think he said it's 4"??

Dude,
You are soooo lucky on the timing. Ive been waiting for months to score his stuff. You have to be very diligent to check the site for when things are coming up. Your timing was perfect. I scored 2 this morning. I was up since 630am checking his blog every 15 min for the post. You are a lucky dog.
On the Wingnut 4"...Since its my only Atwood tool right now, its on my keychain. Its a bit big, but not horrible. With my new Prybaby, Im going to switch it out since it is shorter (and lighter), but more importantly has a bottle opener. The Prybaby will definitely work better for keychain carry. Some of Atwood's other stuff would carry lighter, but they are in the past and now I have to wait for him to do something new. Ive only known about his stuff for about 3 months now. You can see some of the other stuff hes done on his website "past work" "one of a kind" "hangar" - for example keychain prybaby - I'd love to get a "Nibble" tool.
Now I have to wait for the mail to come next week!!!
Glad to be of help to you.

Don't own a Multi-Tool as I tried carrying one and NEVER NEVER NEVER have use for the pliers. So instead the most I carry is a Victorinox Farmer, or Huntsman. I've no use for a Multi-Tool.
That's just me though. :)

I really like SOG MT's for a few reasons. Implements can be changed out by the owner as the entire MT can be taken apart with a pair of 1/4" wrenches AND they are made in the USA.

I carry a leatherman Skeletool CX on my front belt loop everyday, as well as a Leatherman Pioneer in a belt sheath and a squirt E4 on my keys
Cheers!

Surely these are too heavy and bulky for Every Day Carry !?!

All right then....I'll give it a go for a week.
I've been 'caught out' a couple of times needing basic tools and had myself thinking I wish I had my Winchester multi-tool with me.
here goes...
