I just recieved my Spring edition A.G. Russell catalog yesterday, and I noticed that he is carrying the red Snap-its again.

It says in the heading that the red handled model is only available through the A.G. Russell magazine. It has black Kraton inserts in the handle for better grip, and looks down-right snazzy with its red exterior. It is going for $49.95 in either PE or SE.

Geez, I am feeling tempted......

What do you think of this knife? Anyone?

Some folks don't like the snap hook, as it effectively reduces the amount of blade that can pass thru on the cut, but in fact, there is a large choil on the blade that is about the same size as the hook, so it is unlikely to interfere.

IMO, the Snap-It blade shape is essentially the precursor to the Salsa blade, although slightly longer. Steel is AUS-8, a good steel for lots of outdoor exposure. The kraton holds well, and you will be surprised and pleased by how thin the overall package is.

The FRN texture is good on this one. It is one of only two FRN Spydies I own, one is the Snap-It and the other is the Catcherman (on because it is not made in stainless).

Plus, since Spyderco is using red for trainers only, you won't find anymore red FRN Spydies being made.

Hi Spydernut...

I own two snap-its; one black and one red/black. I use them for backpacking and like the hook. However, the hook does interfere with the length and full use of the blade and the snap is not a positive locking carabiner. It can slip off (I've lost one that way.). I keep mine around my neck on a lanyard (there is a lanyard hole) or tied to my backpack harness by a lanyard and then clipped where I want it with the snap it. I like the feel of the black one better, but like the red/black because it is easier to find.

All in all... it is a good reasonably priced knife for outdoor use.

I would like mine better if the snap was on the other end.

I think the knife your looking for is called the Remote Release. It features a hook & clasp mechanism at the "south" end of the knife, rather than the top side of the knife like the Snap-it. I think the cheapest I've seen them is for $29 bucks over at SMKW. (Smoky Mountain Knife Works).

I've been thinking about getting one....
