How can stop or at least dramatically stop my hording of knives?

I seem to have a problem. In one year I've gone from 1 Byrd knife to 71 knives:eek: I know this is wrong group at ask for help from, but hey you folks help to "empowered" me, even if it wasn't directly. Maybe someone knows how to get this under control.

For starters, I might just limit myself to the Mules. The problem is, as we all know, :spyder: has a way of releasing cool knives that you just have to have.

It's pretty simple, really. Just run out of money. ;)

Do what I did. Sell all the stuff you will not use. Get mods done to knives you really like and use them.

I only have a few sentimental knives and knives that people have given me as gifts. The others are total users. In a few days here I'm going to see if I can use my black SE Salt I for the rest of the year. Just using only it. While I'm using it I will have a few knives headed out to Tom Krein to get some tip mods, regrinds etc. I may also have someone make G10 handles for my Centofante 4 with no liners. I love having say 10 knives that I really really like as opposed to 100 that I like most of. At one point I was at about 130 knives. Now I have about 15 and I love and use them all.

you eventually run out of knives to get and slow down;) i think my first year i bought 50 or so and then 70 or so the next 2 years and now i have slowed down a lot. you could branch out and just collect all of just one model or a few in my case:p (enduras, lums, kopas & ladybugs) buy the ones you like, the best thing about spydies is if you just one day to decide to sell them all you won't lose too much money on them and they were fun while you had them.

Guys,

Thanks for the levity and advice.

I think I'd be happy just staying at the point I am. It's not just the cost. I have spent enough to buy a decent used car. Really it's the time. For months I was able to stay off of Ebay, but recently started logging on. Between Ebay and Forum (mostly Ebay), I feel my life is slipping away.

David, all my knives are users. Many are used or seconds. But, this weekend I actually put a knife in storage as a collectable. That scared me because I can almost justify this obsession by using all my knives. But, as you point out, how do you use 70+ knives?

Thanks,

Jim

maybe you can start your e-shop to sell second hand knife or maybe you can do a contest or giveaway to clear out your knife collection :)

Wife's are good at knowing when you've had enough, got too many or said too much.
Hang on while I ask.

I started looking at what knives fill what niche. Just how many 3" flat ground PE knives do you need? While they all have different styles and somewhat different cutting performances, they are all functionally the same.

Pretty much the only knife that I don't have a functional duplicate of in the current lineup is the Captain, but I do have a Lava and a PE Crossbill, so if I carry them both, it's almost the same :p

I guess I don't have an SE harpy yet though...

Pick out 2 or 3 of your favorite knives and get rid of the rest. Then use the 2 or 3 you have. After a few weeks you will probably narrow it down to 2 or maybe one that you really like. YOu may even find it necessary to leave the knife forms alone for a while. After all knife forms are just another means of advertizing.

LOL :D How true. I think all the cool Spyders coming out this year are rapidly sending me in that direction. And now I'm getting into Helle knives and Surefires! Time to start moonlighting.

As a very frugal curmudgoenly farmer I had no other alternative but to begin making knives. I wanted to make sole authorship Damascus automatics and I still haven't accomplished that goal. But I'm getting there.

If it is any condolence it costs more to make knives than I used to spend buying knives but then again I was cheap and only occasionally bought a Spyderco.

Lobotomies and deep addictions are not really an escape, just enjoy your passion...Take care...Ed

I agree! I don't smoke nor do I drink, the former for the obvious health reasons and the latter cos I've done all that in earlier years and it holds little interest for me any longer............I have to spend my money on something!!! :D

Hey bud

There is little advise I can offer on the subject, because I haven't been in the game a long time.

If your meeting your family responsibilities. Bills, Wife, kids, Schools, Rent and so forth. I'd say keep doing what your doing. If your bouncing the rent check every once in a while I'd look for another hobby :p:D.
