Saturday at our house warming party, my digital camera was stolen.
Today at school, my Macbook Pro was stolen.
It's really something else.
I just bought a $1800 bike and this happens. Although we can afford it, thank God, it kills me to think of the insensitive acts these people committed. If I hadn't backed up my data, and my parents couldn't wire me money for a new computer, I'd be screwed for finals right now. It makes me miss them all the more with how helpful they were. I love them. Can't wait to go home, stop working, and have dinner with my family.
I wish I could meet the people that took these things. Screw the money, it's the photos, videos, songs, and projects that make my computer special to me.
Now I'm on a new 17" Macbook Pro and I've installed Lojack. I won't let it out of my sight. And I've grown up a smidgen too.

That sucks. It's unbelievable how people don't/can't/won't think about the effects stealing has on others.

The part that really sucks is that if you had the camera stolen at your house warming party it was probably some one you know.
That is usually who will rob you blind, because you never expect friends or family to take anything from you.I bet if a friend or family member really needed any of those items you would have probably gave it to them,if your like me.

Qkid, that stinks! I threw one party in college, and the final outcome was a total disaster. It took a whole day to clean up the aprtment and clean the carpets-yuk. After that I decided I would help clean, collect money, pick-up kegs, whatever, I just wouldn't throw a party at my own place.
Hope you get your stuff back, but in a college town I wouldn't hold my breath.

Very unfortunate...after having even a minor thing stolen, my calculator, which was stolen right off my desk in my lab when I was in grad school a few moons ago, I just took the defensive tack of assuming the worst case scenario, i.e., don't trust anyone around your stuff!! :D

Sorry to hear of your loss...I don't understand what makes people steal other people's things...especially when they have some sort of sentimental value only known to the owner. I remember hosting a cocktail party for a bunch of shrinks (of which I was one) and someone stole my zippo cig lighter. How much does a zippo cost!....this one was sentimental to me only because it was given to me by my best friends mother. He lost his life in Nam while serving his country and this zippo with his 82nd airborne logo and name inscribed on it was the only object I had to remember him by other then fond memories. The sad part about all this was some freaking shrink stole it from me....can you believe that one? So I feel for you Qkid..I really do.....Doc:(

stealing and vandalism are a big thing with me.
in highschool i had a nice watch. nothing TOO nice a decent fossil watch. i get changed for gym and put it in my pants pocket and hung them up on the hook in the locker room, i get back after class to get changed again and the watch is gone. its not so much my watch was gone it was that i would probably NEVER find out who had stolen it. i wasnt a trouble maker, or have any enemies, i stayed to myself so it makes me think "why me?"
when taking classes in college my truck got keyed while in the parking lot. once again i kept to myself didnt try to make enemeies or anything. so i had no idea why it would be vandalized. never did find out who did it, went to school security and they didnt find/do anything.
same vehicle i guess it was 2008 or 2007 and i get it in one day and i go to work early in the morning and noticed some gunk on my side mirror and i didnt think much of it cause it was dark and didnt get a good look. when i leave work i notice there is egg shells stuck to my truck and it clicks that that is what i saw that morning my paint is messed up from where the egg actually hit it. i dont know why my truck would get egged, i dont really talk to many people from my town. so its like why me? who did it? what did i do to deserve this?

Your story illustrates why I don't like having people come over to my place. I'm friendly and sociable... I just like being that way over at someone else's place. If I want to toss a small party, I invite folks to Dave & Buster's. I pay for the food, and there'll be better entertainment than what I can provide at home.
A former supervisor of mine who hit a horrible string of bad luck, right before he quit, had something special stolen from his place. It all started when he traded in his old Camaro for a slightly used Nissan Maxima. The cops in his neighborhood though he must have been doing something illegal to afford such a "nice" ride. (This was back when the Nissan Altima was a boring, nothing special, sedan). He was just a young guy who was fortunate enough to know the right people, and landed a very good paying job.
Believing him to be a drug dealer, they pulled him over each and every time they could. In a few short months, he had enough moving violations to get a suspended license. Then one time, he forgot to put on his seatbelt. That ticket caused him to lose his "Driving only to work and back home" license. He was forced to sell the car. Working in Long Island, public transportation out there is a joke; but he had no choice.
When a female co-worker got promoted ahead of him, he wasn't happy; and expressed his views to the boss. (To be honest, while she is a decent person; the boss did frequently and openly flirt with her. And she wasn't the most qualified either). That caused him to be on the boss' $#^% list.
Before he quit, I bought him a Sensa pen for his Birthday. (Felt sorry for him). High quality pen with a nice combination display case/ pen holder/ business card case. He loved it. But the day after his Birthday, he noticed someone had stolen a valuable family heirloom that he had been given. The only folks who were at his home for his Birthday party were close friends and family.
One of them had stolen it. Couldn't have been anyone else... Out of everything that happened to him, I think that was the one that affected him the most.
I'm a friendly guy, but some of my best friends have never seen the inside of my home.

I am a very cautious and canny person, and I use to never let anything mine out of my sight, so it happened just one time that someone stole me something and fortunately it was a simple thing..
I really Hate thieves and on Earth there is never a lack of them...
after the recent earthquake that hit middle italy, many thieves went there just to stole things from debris.. this thing always happens in these cases; I remember even after hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans..

Sorry for your loss.
I've lived a few places where anything not locked up might disappear,
so have become very diligent about security.
My dad's laptop was stolen from his university office, when he was
in the next door office of his associate for a couple minutes.
Hopefully humanity can evolve to a better place before we are extinct...

I hate theives. The frustrating part is that despite all the money you've put into the item, they're probably just going to go down to the pawnshop and hock it for as much cash as the pawnshop will give (which is usually a fraction of its value).
I met a home builder who had had all the copper in a house torn out three times in the same house. The last time that they did it, they busted out all the windows just out of spite.
Personally, I wouldn't carry a laptop on a college campus unless you have some sort of curiculum that makes it necessary. Granted, when I was going to school, I had a $400 car, a phone card instead of a cell phone, and I lived and ate on-campus. I waited until the ZIP drizes went on sale to buy one.
If you do choose to have a laptop, something like one of these (http://store.diyhut.com/mopral.html) may add an extra layer of security. It will keep you from getting distracted and walking away from your laptop and it will also protect your laptop from bolder thieves. Imagine someone trying to slip away quietly with your laptop and it suddenly begins making very loud noises and drawing them lots of unwanted attention.:D
