View Full Version : Your First Spyderco

Do you remember your first Spyderco purchase? What model and why did you get it?

My first Spyderco was a SS Police model with the serrated edge! I loved it's intimidating yet elegant look. I also wanted a knife that was larger than any of my friends' knives. I used that knife for everything and I still own it to this day! We've gone through thick and thin together and it has remained a favorite of mine all these years.

So..........What is your story?

I bought a calypso jr. which developed blade play after about a week (got me through the packages of christmas well) and returned it

But I'm gonna get a new start with my wegner jr on the way!

My first was a Terzoula Jr. plain edge from the old SFO (called Ironstone) in Golden. Then I took a big jump--Carbon fiber/titanium Michael Walker 50-50 from the same store. Still have 'em both.

My first was a Police SS, SE which I inhereted from a friend and had never used. I carried it to one of my daughter's lacrosse games and we took bottled water in plastic shrinkwrap for the team. With one surprising swipe I opened up the shrinkwrap on two sixpacs and cut open 5 plastic bottles of water which leaked all over the place. So I learned what sharp means.

Spyderco Standard, old style with the stamped clip.

I bought it at a Hoffritz Cutlery Store on closeout. I thought it looked "cool". I didn't get another Spydie after that for 10 years (the next one was a Jot Singh Khalsa).

Dude ~

My first folder was a C-17 Catcherman! I saw this in the '98 PDR. It caught my attention almost immediately. I was on the lookout for a good folding fillet knife and I found just what I was looking for at a toolshop. The price was right and the knife feels great on my hands, so I purchased it wihthout any hesitation.. The C-17 served well in many of my outings especially when it comes to cleaning, gutting and dressing fish.. Though the AUS-6 was a bit stiff, it held pretty well.. I'm actually looking forward to the MBS-26 version to see how flexible and strong it can be...

Mine was my Native Lightweight CE. It felt good in my hands, was easy to open and close (instantly fell in love with the round hole), and was good-looking yet useful for utility work. It's now my concealed carry, with the Calypso Jr. as my EDC at work.

My first Spydercos were two Natives.
Bladeforums PE.
Stainless PE.
I had been looking at Spyderco knives for some time, never being able to decide where to start. I saw these in a package deal and it was like, "Hello".

G10 PE Police. Biggest and best. Also, I have a question. Is the SFO going to offer the FRN colored Jesters? I need a green one.

My first was a Endura, actually wanted a Police model first but the store didn't have one. So the Endura was a hold over until I could get a Police model. Ended up with both a Police and Ayoob at the same time. All three were puchased in one month. Good start.

My first was one of the early Terzoula models, with the aluminium handles.
Plain blade. Still works great!!

I still remember when a former boss tried to confiscate it from me(with lust in his eyes towards my knife). And all he got from me is the "official NJ state Bird".

Spydercard 50/50 & Spydewrench PE.

I'd seen many s in various films over the years, 'blades with the roundhole in them', very distinctive looking knives, so it was inevitable I'd end up owning some.

My Tufram Plain Cricket, about 2 years ago.
Someone had showed it to me and it looked like a cool knife. Walked into an outdoorshop couple of months later and there was one on display. Wasn't priced either. Got it for approx $30 (75 NLG).

Jaxon,
We will be offering the FRN Jesters at the outlet, but I do not have them yet. Stay tuned, it shouldn't be to much longer. We do have the Burgandy Micarta Jesters in stock if you were interested in one of those!

My first was a combo edge FRN Endura, I bought it off the Snap On Tools truck about 5 years ago. Two weeks later I bought a S/S Police S/E and shortly after a Native P/E FRN Gin-1.

I now own 25+ Spydercos and looking for early models to collect.

My first Spydie came out of a search for a good, small blade to carry at college. I walked into one of the few stores around that carried Spyders, looking for a Dyad Jr.

However, all they had was the Endura FRN. I picked that knife up, my hand said "buy it". So I did.

Oddly enough, even though my first Spyder wasn't even the type I wanted when I walked in, I will never regret buying it. I am still searching for a sheeple-knife, though...

Maybe the Mouse or the Salsa will fit the bill.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Mine was a yellow handled rescue. I bought it to beat up when I was doing warehousing work, because it is easy to sight when I lay it down.

A knife is the most expensive and least effective screwdriver you will ever buy. However, we do have the blade strecher if we can get the solar power thingie to work

A beat-up stomped-on Delica that I found on the Appalacian Trail in the NH White Mountains. It was filled with mud and suffered from an abusive life with it's former owner. It got washed in a stream and coated in vasiline lip gloss to lube it. When it arrived home it got a real bath, a sharpen and a light sanding of the handle. It rode in my backpack for two years and then one day it returned itself to another trail in the mountains. By now it must be with it's next owner...

First Spydie was an old Endura with the FRN clip. Found it 7 years ago in the Base Exchange in a blister pack and was ordered to buy it buy for EDC by a Spyderwise Master Sergeant. Still have it to this day and have never broken the clip. Retired it 2 years ago for a G-10 Rookie and bless that MSgt almost every day for making me a Spyderman! Just wish they made the Military with the Air Force seal engraved on a black ano blade and an OD or Camo handle.

Hi Folks,

Mine was a serrated, G-10 Rookie that Spyderholic now has in his colection. It was the one I decided on after lusting after several models. Finally, I knew I had to get it once I found this picture of it online. I think that it was mostly that I had been looking for the rare G-10 Police, with a hollow ground blade for a long time and had been unable to find this knife so I thought I would get it's baby brother.

Now that I am more repectable (office bound), I've had to put the Mili into retirement but it still has an occassional outing.

BTW
Jeff/1911, where the heck did you get that laser engraving ? Was it a custom job or a special sprint run ? Either way it's awsome.

PE FRN Dragonfly. Clip broken, filed, sanded and buffed smooth. Blade reprofiled. Has gone through a pseudo-stonewashed finish and now almost mirror polish. It is my experimental knife, but I still carry it as a summer EDC and when I need a super light "pocket" knife. Love it...

yog, Ruxton...

The knife came to me as a result of a trade with Spyderholic. Apparently, when it belonged to him he had somebody in the laser engraving shop at Spyderco do it for him. As far as I know, it's "one of a kind".

I think that it can still be done to a Rookie, if I'm not mistaken. Both he and the laser engraving artist replied to a previous thread with their comments about this, and I believe they said that the program for this engraving was still on file at the plant. Best bet is to contact spyderholic and ask him.

when I was five, I always wanted a ladybug. then for my sixth b/day, I got one from my mom. my hands were just small enough to operate the blade, then every year after that, they just got bigger, and bigger and rarer, and rarer. lady bug to dragonfly, dragonfly to delica, delica to endura, endura to merlin, and merlin to delica, delica to endura, merlin to g-10 harpy, and the harpy is living with the delica now.

First spydie was a grey ats55 matriarch.

Reason for egtting it was I purchased a Gerber Mark II and a Gerber Guardian backup, the backup came blunt n faulty, I was not impressed with Gerbes customer service and thus said "to hell with them"
I carried the G/B for defense and since it was faulty I needed something to protect myself with (workin in slummy area)
I saw the remarks Pertinax(my supplier n a kickass guy) had of the civie and matriarch.
Thus I gave it a try, and to date have never bought anything other than spyderco's.

My first purchase as the "Q" ; I liked the ability to change the clip : Tip up,
Tip down, right, or left handed. A VERY
versitile knife. Wish Spyderco would
introduce it to their line. For now
it's the C 29BK "Cricket" : lightweight,
easy to deploy, and for such a small
blade, that mother is sharp !

As with a good portion of the users, my first was a FRN Delica PE in '99. I got back from camp with cadets, and had 120 or so to spend. I wanted a quality knife...

most of the old timers have heard the full version of it a couple times, so I'll just say that one of the regulars at Cutting Edge(my supplier) said they( ) were good. I tried it(as the cash was a gift for doing camp(DND pays us $60/week for camp, $3-5K for staff(8 wks)).

I have used the Delica for 2 1/2 yrs, and still doesn't show any real signs of wear. Couple small scratches on the spine, and some discolouration around the hole(haven't oiled in about 2 weeks, needs it). Had *1* rust spot despite the fact that I carried it in the back of my waistband biking for 2 yrs. get it out to use and it's got moisture all over the place. Didn't buff it out b/c it's IN the 'R' of Spyderco on the tang stamp. That was shortly after I got it(that next spring) and nothing again since.
