Which do you prefer and why? My vote goes to tip-up for ease of opening. I can honestly see no reason for tip down, but there must be one because Spyderco continues to make them.

Tip-up, blade facing backwards. That places the hole right where my thumb naturally goes when placed in my pocket.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.
There was another of these about a month ago. My favorite is tip-up, because it is the easiest to grab. Reach in, thumb on the spydie hole, and pull it out using the clip and thumb purchase. The knife then comes out aligned with your hand, ready to open.
Tip-down is by far the safest method of carrying a knife clipped in your pocket. Tip-up knives can and sometimes do open slightly in the pocket, biting the person carrying it if he or she were to reach down either for the knife or beyond it for something in the pocket. It's also reasonably quick to draw once you get used to it. I use a Calypso Jr. as my EDC, which carries tip-down. I can draw either of my knives, my Calypso Jr in my right pocket, or my Native carried right-side IWB, fast enough, and many times I can draw and open the tip-down faster.

Would you like to know how to put an image in your sig? Oh, and my Delica (tip up) has never even started to come open in my pocket, but my tip-down Colt Detective Special has come 1/4" open. Also, when the knife is tip up, the blade is less likely to come open because it is resting against the back of your pocket. That Emerson Wave thing is cool, but does anyone know if it carries the knife tip up or down? I'm pretty sure it's up because all the Emersons I've seen are tip up.

I only use tip down because all my tactical openings work with it best. Also I don;t like the blade tip towards me because I have had a blade with tip up open up on me before.

All of my Spydercos are tip-up carry!!!
I like tip up but my favorite <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> is a tip down carry. No problem Great image clipiteer.

I prefer tip-up, but some of my favourite knives are tip-down.

I much prefer tip down. With the knife in my right front pocket, and to the rear, the blade spine is against the rear of the pocket. This to me, gives a higher degree of safety, in case you have to reach into that pocket for change etc. It also positions the knife just right for my hand to get the proper grip, and faster manipulation. I do like tip up for left hand carry on Spydercos, however. RKBA!

TIP UP!
Jeff }{
Having started tip down, I'm gradually coming around to tip up.
There are only two disadvantages to tip up carry I have found.
One is that some of the clips when gripped aren't quite as comfortable tip up.
And the other is that I put my hand in my pocket yesterday and found a quater open tip up Chinese folder. You can imagine my surprise, especially as my fingers went between the blade and the handle. I have no worries with lock backs, but I might be a little more warey of tip up liner locks and compression locks.

Tip-up is what I started with and am use to deploying, but I have a few tip downs also.

I honestly like both carry styles. Both have there place. Just like serrated and plain edges.

I prefer tip up..EXCEPT!! with liner locks meant only for right hand carry, have a band aid on my thumb at this moment from a kershaw stupidly stuffed in my left hand pocket

Tip up. Deployment seems quicker for me.

Tip up, baby, it's the only way in my mind.
It's easier to deploy and looks better to me, but then again, I'm a weirdo anyway.<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I prefer tip up. There are two reasons for it. 1) Carrying it this way makes the laynard available. One can easyly pull out the knife because the laynard is always hanging outside the pocket (and can also be secured by the laynard).
2) If the knife rides low in a pocket of my pants, the tip indexes upwards. You see, I prefer cutting my finger rather than family jewels <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> if the knife should accidently open.

TIP-DOWN, it's safer and makes the one hand deploy easier (and faster) for me.

To : ALL
I prefer TIP DOWN ( such as on my
C 29BK "Cricket" ); although I base
whether TIP UP or DOWN by the locking
mechanism. I had to send my C 66 "Vesuvius" back to SFO to have it set
from TIP UP to DOWN as the "compression
lock" had a tendency to open in the
UP position. I guess <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> has to work
out the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ( no pun intended! ). With
lock backs it's definetly TIP UP.

I luv my Military (tip-down) but prefer the tip up carry as it seems easier, i.e. quicker, to deploy...
