Went to the gun shop today looking for a US manufactured steel or alloy frame 9mm, probably Beretta, with Walther PPK/s .380 (made in US by Smith and Wesson) as a second choice. Wanted 9mm mostly because ammo is comparatively cheap, and 12 yr. old can handle it. Insist on US made (so far, though my fav. 9mm is Browning Hi-Power). Can't abide plastic guns (but if I had to carry one every day along with a pile of other stuff, I bet I'd learn to).

Came home with new Remington 1911 R1 in .45. Made in NY. Stainless match grade barrel and bushing. Walnut grips.

Shot well with a smooth but slightly heavy trigger pull. I'm extremely pleased--especially given that we didn't know each other yet, and this was just beginning of break-in.

Needs extended beaver badly--I lost a little skin.

This is a lot of USA made gun for the price.

Nice man, 1911's are great.

Congrats!

At the end of the day, the whacky trigger on the beretta did me in. Here's a side by side at 7 yds, 1911 on left, 92FS on the right--and way up in the top right hand corner, 1st shot with the crazy super duper long DA pull of the 92.
I can't wait to make grips for my pistols and matching knives. This fall should be a very creative time.

2cha, perhaps Wilson Combat still offer's their drop-in beavertail for the Guv't? It's not going to cost you a limb, and it will get the job done really well.;)

How many rounds do you have through it so far?

Congrats! Also, nice grouping. I've got a 1911 waiting for me at home... my new project pistol. I actually looked for the R1... but it hadn't been released and I found this High Standard for a pretty good price, went with it instead.

Thanks for the compliment. It was only at 7 yds, but I don't know if I could ever shoot better, and I'm basically a newcomer to handguns. Other than the long DA trigger on the Beretta, both the guns are as accurate as I'll ever be. Grouping sure looks a heck of a lot cooler with a .45--and I loved the pile of shredded cardboard and paper behind the target--don't get that with a .22 or even a 9mm!!

Looking around, thanks for the suggestions. Thinking Ed Brown "smithed" in instead of a drop-in, however, in the mean time, the gun is going to Remington to see if they'll do something about it (doubtful). I just don't think a tool should require modification for normal use. Sounds like a design flaw. When I talked to them this morning they said the design is straight G.I. I'm too inexperienced to know.

62--I would've loved to shoot more, but the cut from the beavertail was beginning to hurt and throw off my ability to properly aim.

Yes, that Remington copies the original design from 100 years ago. Beavertails, extended slide releases, bigger and ambidextrous safeties, decent sights, etc. are all fairly recent innovations compared to the original design.

Actually, the sights are really good, 3 dot, dovetailed--top safety is ok, but the slide release blows.

Nice grouping with the .45 caliber! You should try the same comparison at 15 yards and see what the results look like.

Uhhhh, if I did, I sure wouldn't post a picture of the results!!! I'm a novice pistol shooter--probably fewer than 2000 rds. in my life.
