First off let me say that I have a really thick beard, How thick you say?...Well by one in the afternoon you could sharpen any spyderco knife on the side of my face and get a sharp edge. I have been through the whole gamut of shavers. For a long time I was using a straight edge cause it was the only way I could get a clean shave. But I was cutting the hell out of my face and got tired of walking around wearing toilet paper as face fashion. So I switched to hand razors. By the time the regular hand razors (like Bic) reach four blades...I couldn't fit it under my nose....So I started using electric razors....The Norelco with it's three rotating blades used to catch the corners of my mouth and cut the heck out of them....so that's a no go....I have been using a Braun for a while and it gave me a decent shave, but I wasn't real pleased with the shave I got. Recently I needed a new blade for my regular Braun, I purchased one but still it was irritating my face like you wouldn't believe. I went on a search for a new electric razor..I tried a Remington but it didn't give me the shave I wanted. So I returned that one. I remember a few years ago I tried a Panasonic razor and was very pleased with the shave I got. Problem was it seems like it was a popular razor for shaving your head. The baldy craze was in full swing and I couldn't get replacement blades anywhere for it....So it kinda of went by the waste side. So I was shopping the other day in Bed, Bath and Beyond and happened across another Panasonic. http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Personal-Healthcare/Men-s-Shavers/model.ES8243A_11002_7000000000000005702 The Es8243A Razor....it looked like something extra-terrestrial...and I was hesitant to buy it...but it was retailing for $159 and it was on sale for $99 and I had one of those 20% off coupons from the store and decided for $79 I'd give it a try. I am very impressed with the results. After a couple of days of shaving with this razor I was like...this is a great shaver, it gave me a close shave which I was happy about. But It took me a long time to achieve the smoothness I desired. This razor is also one of those wet/dry shavers, and I had never used one with shaving creme before...seems like it shouldn't work...who uses shaving creme with an electric razor!....Well after reading the instruction manual that came with the razor it said try the wet function with shaving creme and you will be totally amazed at the result. So I thought against my better judgment, what the heck I'll give it a try. The results were totally awesome....My face is like a baby's butt after my shave...I still can't believe it...The shaver from Panasonic is simply amazing when using this function. When you find something great I think it's important to tell others of your experience. There are so few products out there that perform like they advertise...But this one really works and is worth $159 if you have as thick as beard as I do....I couldn't be happier...I keep making my wife stroke my beard to feel how smooth my face and neck are...she is also impressed to say the least...Just thought I'd pass on a good one for all you lectric shaving buddies....Doc:D

very cool. ive been through both Norelco and Brauns. With both of them it felt like i had to rub my face raw before i could get a close shave. i might have to pick one of these up.

They do say the number one shaver is a Phillips, but I wouldn't know because i'm a wet shave man, but I did a little research, and if I was going to buy a electric razor it would definaetly be a Phillips shaver. Check out the Phillips shaver reveiw, click the link.

I've used Norelco electric razors on and off for almost fifty years, and am currently using one. I have a relatively heavy beard, but a fairly slow growing one, so I can get away with shaving my head and the parts of my face that I shave every other day. What annoys me is that, aside from the "bottom of the line" model I'm now using, they're all cordless and I prefer a corded razor.

I just can't use an electric...no matter what i use i get the worst razor burn ever. For me it's a Mach 3 with some Neutrogena shave lotion....this stuff is so much better than your typical foam/gel stuff.

On top of that, i also shave my head, which will also razor burn to hell and back without a good razor. I've found that anything more than a Mach 3 is just plain old over kill. That 5 blade crap is just more than is necessary. If you get the good shave lotion and don't try to use the same blade for a month then you can't go wrong.

I don't remember the last electric i had...it was the one that came out with the little shave goo packs that went into it. It would do a good job but i still got razor burn on my neck pretty bad.

Hey doc, I had the same problem you did.I use a philips norelco it has three rotating swivel heads on it and I noticed better results when I started using williams lectric shave prior to using the razor.I tried the cream but that got messy.

Best thing I ever found for Razor burn on the face, neck or head is a little Witch Hazel rubbed into the hands then rub into whichever part has the burn...works in about three seconds.....Doc:D

Does it take care of the bumps? That's the worst part for me...later in the day after shaving when i'm working and hot, it flairs up and sucks so bad.

Don't know about those bumps..I don't get em..but it does take away any irritation so I don't see why it wouldn't work to help with those razor bumps...It's cheap enough to give it a try and see for sure...any drug store will carry it....Doc:D

I've used Norelcos then switched to Panasonic. It was a definite improvement for me. I also tried the web shave with it but it gave me terrible razor burns. Dry works fine though. Mine's 8 years old and going strong. I need to find a replacement head soon.

First off... you just aren't right in the head if you think those electric abominations give a great shave :p

I might have to send you a double edge razor and some blades, since you aren't getting my single edge or injectors ;)

I used a braun electric when I first started shaving... moved to mach 3, then schick quattro, and on to traditional equipment. Tonight's shave was a model G schick injector (1946-1955), with a schick tungsten 74 blade, and proraso canned foam (my arm hurts too much to whip up a lather tonight)... 3rd pass was workable (with the grain then across the grain twice), 4th pass (against the grain) left me with a baby butt smooth shave with no irritation in about 15min total. No going over the same spot 4-5 times because it doesn't want to get the one hair.

Not having any of those problems with my new Panasonic...Baby smooth and then some, no irritation, 6 minute shave where it used to take me 12-15 minutes with my Braun, using cheapo drug store foam for the wet shave...simply awesome results....Must be out of my mind but my sandpaper face says different...LOL...Doc:D

Hey Doc, I agree with you. I had a Panasonic wet/dry and it worked well. I used to use it with soap in the shower. One word of caution. You really have to clean that sucker out well since wet hair and shaving cream (soap in my case) breeds bacteria. I would just pop the foil off and rinse it in the shower. I started getting a rash on my cheeks and couldnt figure out why until I opened it up and took a really close look. After than even with opening and blasting it right under the shower head, it still didnt stay clean. Im now back to my Braun...I know that's kind of a yukky story, but dont want you to find out for yourself...

Thanks for the word of caution...since I'm using the creme I am cleaning it after every shave, by using their new sonic cleaner built into the razor...seems to clean it real well and it smells wonderful afterwards...my Braun never smelt this good....Doc:D

I keep Bic disposables around for touch up, but my "EDS" is a Norelco 8240. It took nine months of regular use (at least every other day) before it even started to feel like it was pulling. Replaced the blades and it shaved quick, clean, and close once again. Perfect razor for me.

Aaah, mine didnt have a sonic cleaner. Maybe they figured that out. I did notice Braun makes razors that self clean in a bath of some alcohol or H2O2 solution over night. I think it does vibrate a bit also.

Doc

Does your new job as a Panasonic spokes person come with a car allowance :).

I like the closeness of a razor but also got tired of walking around with toilet paper tags on my face and head. The Norelco does a decent job when the rotory heads are new but after six months or so you start having to go over the same spots over and over again with the resulting irritation.

Doc, how hard is it to keep the heads clean if you are using the wet function? Does a simple rinse under hot water pretty much do the job of keeping the razor head clean?

Well by one in the afternoon you could sharpen any spyderco knife on the side of my face and get a sharp edge.
Does this include trainers? :D

The proper method of cleaning is to put a little liquid soap on top of the blades with the razor closed....then you hold the start button for two seconds and the unit starts to vibrate (sonic cleaner) after 20 seconds it shuts off or you could shut it off manually...Then remove the top part of shaver exposing the inner blades, turn back on the sonic cleaner for twenty seconds while rinsing under cold water. Takes about 40 seconds to clean total...it does a great job....The razor has a display that tells you when to clean, but I am just cleaning it after every shave cause I don't want the blades to get clogged up with my rough beard hair. The Unit also shows on the display how many minutes you are shaving as well as what percentage of charge you have left....Takes only an hour to full charge (100%) I seemed to be using about 10% with each shave (sometimes a little more) so I'm getting about 7 shaves before I need to recharge...Interestingly they say never to use hot water to clean the shaver...seems like the sonic cleaner does all the work of loosening those hairs that usually get caught between the blades. The nice thing about it is it doesn't smell (that mildew/moldy Oder). I keep the whole razor apart for about 15 minutes till it dries, snap it back together and then put it back into it's zipper case...Doc:D
They really do need to send me a new car right away!
