Is it true that plain ol' notebook paper dulls a knife faster than anything (other than upgraded paper products like cardboard and whatnot)??

I have always heard this, but I just find it hard to believe.

Dude ~ Somewhere in Spyderco's R&D facility, there's a gadget where you can mount any s to cut paper by the stacks.. *hee-hee!* Totally AWESME! The machine has its purpose and that is to determine how long a Spydie holds its edge on continous paper cutting chores..

I guess I've always heard that paper dulls a knife faster than most other materials out there. (Besides hemp rope, etc!)

Cardboard is tough on edges too.

Thats why they have letter openers, so that you don't wear down that sharp Spydie.

Paper does dull a knife very quickly due to the
materials used in making paper in general.

Paper is normally wood pulp with a fairly high
acid content ( that's why it yellows so fast) and
some clay and etc. that is requred to make the
paper stock. Add that to the fact that paper is
a "dry" cutting medium the friction at the edge
face is much higher than it would be in meat ,
fruit etc. so the wear is accelerated right at
edge. Cutting a green wood will dull the blade
less than paper will. It gets worse with any
cardboard because of the dirt in cardboard.

What's amazing to me is how hot a blade will get when slicing through a bunch of corrugated.

I once sliced about 10 sheets in half, about 3 feet wide each. I touched the side of the blade to my lip, you know, to check just how hot it really was. Left a tiny little red mark above my lip.

Hi,

paper and card board and really edge dullers.

Old people say there is "sand" inside paper.

Scissors used for paper are "cursed" for ever ! No more Haute Couture for them ! ;-D

CPM440V is really amazing for is edge longivity in cardboard cutting.

cheers,

Paper maintains some of the structural integrity of the parent wood. Hence, paper will dull knives quickly, as it is essentially a thin piece of wood.

Cardboard is worse, as stiffeners are present to lend rigidity.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

No problem. That's why they invented the Sharpmaker--buy one!
