View Full Version : Rear pocket losses

I have always hesitated to carry any clip knife in my rear pocket for fear the clip would catch on a chair while sitting, unknown to me, and I would lose my knife. Have any of you experienced this? The other day, at home, I had my Endura clipped in my right rear pocket and when I got up from my easy chair I noticed the Endura lying on the seat. Don't do that anymore.
If you carry in your rear pocket, how do you make sure you don't knock your knife out of your pocket?

I tore up 2 clips in the past couple weeks carrying a knife clipped to my back pocket. Now when I want to carry a knife there, I just remove the clip and drop the knife in the pocket... works about as well without all the problems.

I almost lost my Small sebbie like that. It fell between my couch cushions. Gave me a nasty fright.

Working at the outlet, I see a lot of broken clips and missing knives. Hands down the I see more of these situations when somebody has the knife in the back pocket. First off, you have all your weight sitting on the knife and the clip, which I believe weakens the clip slightly, making it more prone ro breakage. Also, as John Watson stated, you can have the knife come out of the pocket while sliding in and out of a car seat, or a chair, etc. Now, not everybody has these problems, but from my experience, if you carry the knife in your back pocket, you will probably break the clip or lose the knife eventually. Front pockets have proved to be the best place for a knife.
PS - A side note here. If you were walking down the street and somebody was walking behind you who had a problem with you, how easy would it be for them to grab YOUR knife out of YOUR pocket and go to town? Just something to think about.

Nothing quite like the Buster Keaton-esque charm of standing up at your girlfriend's family reunion / crawfish boil to find much to everyone's amusement that the cheap plastic lawn chair is now hanging from you*****by the clip on your Wenger clipit in your back pocket...........

I try to by mainly cargo pants with flaps covering the rear pockets. That helps out a lot. Also, BDU trousers are the best. I usually carry three knives on my person, but always at least two.
Revolcergeek.
You sound as though your speaking from experience
I don't carry a knife in my back pocket as I have a rather large seat (a so much nicer phrase than "a fat ....." ).
The only time I carried in my back pocket it was my Military. The only trouble was I couldn't find it for 2 hours, it was so slim for a big knife I forgot it was back there
Walk softly, carry a big stick.
Revolvergeek,
Good to see you back forumizing. The "Q" arrived safe and sound. Cleaning the happy drool from said blade and jammin' to a pot of Lafitte's Blend. I'm happy AND hyper!! Thanks a million!! Watch out for them big rigs!
Stay safe, well, and sharp!!

Thanks for the posts. Ryan brought up an important issue with security. Hadn't thought of that, but he is right. In the back pocket it is more accessable to someone wanting to do you harm.
I just gets hard to find places to put all those knives I would like to carry on a day to day basis. Now that I am no longer in law enforcement and work in an office, can't carry to large a knife cause it scares the sheeple.

Yog,
And what an experience it was .... I am not too skinny either and they were raging on me forever about getting stuck in the chair!!
Luckily her uncle, stepfather and all but one of her brothers are ex-military men, so they just wanted to play with the knife after i got untangled!
Java,
Glad that everything got there ok and that you are enjoying them. The Lafitte's was a new blend that I hadn't tried before, but it smelled so good that I thought we both ought to try some of it!
I am still pretty sore and moving slow, but getting better. Just trying to take it slow and drink lots of bean juice to keep my strength up!

I've carried a Spyderco in my RR pocket for 7 plus years. I have had my Endura slide out once, and have caught it on a chair when getting up. The clip broke on it from something else.
If someone wants to grab a knife out of my back pocket, good luck. I'll then have to ask them if they want the other's I'm carrying in my front pockets. Usually I wear my shirt tails out to cover the clips.

The only thing in my back pocket is my wallet. Too many ways to get caught on things. I carry a Starmate clipped to my pants waistband under my belt in the small of my back (jeans). It disappears until you need it.

I don't seem to have that problem....been carrying in my back pocket for years...an ATS34 SE "Military" resides there as we speak.
Also carry a Jess Horn SE black micarta clipped in between my jeans and belt in addition to a Worker clipped the same way on the other side.
Around my neck I carry a Bob Dozier "Bodyguard" in one of his kydex sheaths....a Case "Sowbelly" stockman in my left pocket and a Dozier natural bone small "Folding Hunter" in my right.
The S&W 3" Model 624 .44 Special custom revolver is with me as well in case my blades are not handy!:} Gotta' love those knives though!

I hate the thought of carrying a clipit in my back pocket, a bit of paranoia I think.
The "grab from behind" is a valid point, IMHO. I once saw a so called "security" guy (basically a ridiculous hamburger on steroids) carrying a SS spyderco (probably a police) in his right rear pocket. I immediately thought of grabbing it, and if I (good guy) thinks of it, a bad guy might do it.
Front pockets or waistband for me, or clothesline to conceal any clips.
BTW, I once had a front pocket clipped spydie get caught in a car seatbelt.

Howdy Chuck! Welcome to Land!
I see no real reason to put a in the back pocket. Since my thumb naturally rides in the RF pocket, a Spyder there is right at home, with instant access.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.
