View Full Version : must Meerkat wiggle?

Hi. The Spyderco Meerkat seems to be the
perfect under two-inch folding knife -- easy
to hold and use, easy to open and close, with
good quality.
One thing bothers me, though: when locked,
the blade still can move a bit. You can
wiggle it (just a little bit). <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Anyway, I'm not sure I should send it in for
a repair, since it seems to be a problem
intrinsic to the phantom lock. One of the
scales moves to unlock the blade. Whenever,
after opening the knife, that scale is not
perfectly lined up with the body, the blade isn't stably fixed in place.
You can deliberately move the scale so that
it's perfectly in line with the body, and
then the blade is as stable as a delica's,
but that's not a quick, natural way to open
the knife.
Does anyone have any experience with this
problem or suggestions? Thanks.

I can tell you that mine does not do that.I do really like it s design along with the navigator.Like you I think you can not do any better for that size knife.I had a Mouse but it did not seem to be nearly as user friendly for someone with large hands.

Hmm. Yours doesn't move at all when locked?
I don't mean side to side but in the direction
it moves when closing.
Maybe I should get it repaired, then.

I have had two, both had an unacceptable amount of side to side play and I ultimately returned it for a salsa.

Mine has side-to-side wiggling too. <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Maybe I can try to exchange it for a
Navigator somehow.

The one I have has slight side to side but no up and down play.

So I got a Navigator, a more expensive knife,
and I didn't like it as much as the Meerkat:
it has a stainless steel clip that isn't as
low-profile as the wire clip on the Meerkat.
I tried putting the Meerkat's clip on the
Navigator ... that worked, but I still prefer
the Meerkat. The Navigator, by comparison,
is harder to open, even after lubrication and
breaking in.
But the kicker for me is that the Navigator,
being almite-coated aluminum, is more slippery
than the Meerkat! I find the Meerkat easier
to work with; with the Navigator I slip or
lose my grip.
Just a story for any wiggling Meerkat owners
who may be following this thread.

Umm, I've been thinking at a Meerkat as my next <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, but now I have second thoughts <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>... (Though I'll probably get myself one after all, it seems too addictive, even with the problems you exposed)

I think Meerkat is still worth having, dispite
the wiggle.
It would probably cause problems for some uses,
but in general use, I don't notice the wiggle.
