View Full Version : Where has the VG10 Civvie Gone?

We were told the VG10 Civvie would be available shortly after the first of the year. However, none of the dealers seem to have one and even the factory store only lists the ATS55 version. Is the VG10 version still coming? I so, when? If not, why not, and is S30V or another new generation steel in the works for the Civvie? Or is the slow death spiral of the Civvie via benign neglect going to continue??

Nice to see you again, BSC. Lets not be so fatalistic, OK? I was wondering the same thing myself. It seems VG-10 models have been slowly replacing the older ones one at a time?

Pachucks,

I thought so too until I started checking more deeply. I couldn't find anyone on the net who had a VG10 version. Then I called SFO and they said they had none and didn't expect any for some time. (They did, however say that they thought the new steel would eventually become available.)

But that still leaves my question(s) unanswered. I'm sure we're not the only ones that wouod like to know.

By the way, what would you think of a 4 in. VG10 blade G10 handled lockback Harpy? (with double liners, of course!?)

If it has the now mandatory "Bowe dent" you can put me down for two. I might even buy a third to keep in storage, just in case. No, I'd definitely buy a third. I believe this would be a best-seller for Spyderco. (See my reply in the other post where you mentioned this also.)

I don't have any inside info, but my understanding is that once the supply of ATS-55 blades has been expended, the VG-10's will begin seeing daylight. The Boye dent has been on the last Civies I have received.

Pachucko,

Yes, they have the dent now. I'm looking at one with it right now.

The VG-10 Civilians are supposed to be "in" now. Awaiting further info from Spyderco.

Uhh we need to sell the ATS 55 before the VG10's come into stock. As you might or might not know it's not a knife for everone. So it might take a while for the changeover to happen.

I guess thats the word, BSC. You'll just have to wait a little while longer. Pachucks

I hope it's only a LITTLE while. But I'm hooked; I'll buy one as soon as it becomes available at a reasonable price.

BSC, or anyone else, Have you ever "disected" (Sp.?) one of these? What would be involved (materials, work, expense) in adding a second liner? Any thoughts?

Pachucko, the innards of my cricket have seen plenty of light...

I'm currently making SS handles for it, but can tell you: IMHO it would actually be simple for us tinkering people to add a second liner. Just need longer screws...

The (factory, tufram)sides are 0.070" thick, and a liner could be 0.030" and still add thickness/strength. I have my new scales 0.080" and there's all the strength I need.

The back spacer screws are 1/72 taps, but I have new screws for my SS scales on the clip(now 2-56), with more tension on the clip. Just buy longer screws from your local craft shop(I used Hobby world), but know that tinkering has a chance of voiding warrarties. I haven't damaged mine yet in a yr of tinkering and cleaning, but if I happen to damage anything it's out of my wallet for parts.

Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Thats the problem, I find it pretty difficult to hammer a nail straight! I'm definitely not a "tinkerer."
Thanks for the advice though.

VW,

How are the clear scales for the cricket doing?

VW,
Thanks for the update on your Cricket work. A hearty second to Linda's request on the clear scale pix and a request, if you're willing, to share more of the techical aspects of the SS handle and liner work. I have long lamented the demise and subsequent paucity of Almite Crickets (casts envious eyes on Rico's burgeoning herd of Crickets). This limits after market handle reworkers like Frank Recupero who prefer handles of Almite and SS or full SS liner models to add their scales.

If the addition of a second liner works well and provides frame stiffness, the possibilities for rescaling without changing the knife's overall thickness and handling, are virtually unlimited. Keep us posted and happy tinkering.

Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
