I have just started to look for a good all around carry knife and have discovered Spyderco from a friend of mine, I like the Bob Lum Tanto, black blade folder. Are the knives named after guys like this worth the money? What should I expect to pay, I have found a few on ebay and they all go for over $100, or is there a place on the web I can just get a great deal on one without the auction hassle, Thanks, Bob

Hey dude! Welcome aboard the forums! The Lum's worth every dime and penny. I have a couple of them. Very sharp, cuts like crazy. Great balance, fit and finish. you can never get something so good which you can actually match with the handmade Lums..

Thanks for the welcome samo!! What model Lums do you have? I have seen some other knives by other guys from Spyderco but that Lum looks the best to me right now. I'm totally new to knives and am addicted already, just don't know what to buy. I am into firearms alot and this is an extention I guess. I have seen pics of Wengers, Smith's and a bunch others, but that Lum looks sweet. I want my first knife to be right at or below the $100 range till I know what I'm doing, is it reasonable to get a Lum folder for that? Again Thanks for the reply. Bob

No problemos dude! I have the ti-Lum and black Lum tanto folder, fixed Lum.. They are really AWESME! Well, if you look around the internet retail stores, you might be able to get a good bargain for the Lum. Or email our most influential forumite Glasshartt for a price list!

I also have a couple of the Lum collaborations - the Lum Chinese and the Titanium-handled Lum Tanto Folder. They are both great knives! Beautiful designs, flawlessly manufactured by Spyderco. They are certainly worth the money.
p.s. The Ti Lum Tanto Folder has been discontinued but Knifecenter.com still shows the combo edge in stock for $129.95. if you want to get one before they're all gone. (and no, I'm not affiliated with Knifecenter )

Welcome to the Forum, Dude!
While I don't yet own a Lum Tanto, I do have the Chinese Folder by Bob Lum. I bought mine last fall from New Grahm.com, giving $109.00 for it. I never regreted it either!
My advice is, go get a Lum! They are fine models, and will hold up to whatever you throw at them.
Good luck!

The Lum tanto is a rocking knife. I have one for EDC and it is everything I want (until a new want pops into my head). Seriously though I have been a fan of Spyderco and tanto style blades for years and when Spyderco finally had a tanto it was the combo I had been waiting for.
Under $100 may be harder to find then around $100. The others are correct, check the web stores and you should be able to find a Lum you like.
And yes this is a good, worth while knife to start with for somebody that doesn't have a lot already invested in knives.
Welcome to the Spyderco family.

Welcome aboard! I'm sure that products will suite your needs. As about the Tanto... check the Tekno Junkies Forum, there is a topic there "And the winner is..." posted by voxnaes. There's all you need to know there. Enjoy your new spidie(s)!

Wolfpack,
The Lum is a fantastic folder. I have one, a titanium handled with the combo blade. It's serial numbered so it's showcased. And I love to use one as my EDC but the city I frequent the most, Ann Arbor Michigan, knives with blades that long are against the law. Anyways, welcome to the family.

Thanks for the info guys. What does "Tanto" mean? I know Bob Lum would be the "designer" of this knife, right? Just like my gun hobby, I'm finding it can get expensive with knives, I'll let you guys know when I find and buy my Lum. Bob

Howdy Wolfpack! Welcome to Land!
A Tanto point is a angular, very thick point. It has no curvature, just two straight edges. Take a look at a pic of it, and you will understand.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

well, tantos are actually small Japanese blades (8"-11" oal). they are styled according to the "hamidashi" and "shirazaya" designs. usually, the reinforced tip of the tanto is pointed for excellent piercing qualities and the blade is ground in the "hamaguri" or appleseed style. Bob Lum introduced the Americanised tanto to the US market not too long ago. Check out his hollow grinds as they are peerless..
