I was reading in the mbc catalog that students get wrist guards. Are these special guards available any other way, ie purchased through spyderco factory outlet?

Dear Marauder:

Thanks for the question. So far, the best one-size-fits-all solution we've found has been using boxing hand wraps to pad the wrist and forearm of the knife arm. Although it works reasonably well, there is definitely a better way to go.

Over the past year or so, I've designed and made several prototype guards for Spyderco with the goal of having them produced on a commercial scale. One of the prototypes is very close to perfect, but the cost of producing them in quantity is still a bit high.

At the suggestion of a student in my last MBC class (a professional meat cutter), I've also been looking into the protective gear used by butchers and meat cutters and may have found a better way to go. Hopefully within the next few weeks we'll be able to determine a more precise course for wrist guard development. Until then, it's back to the hand wraps.

Thanks for your interest.

Stay safe,

Mike. Keep us posted because Olive is planning the next proto. We'll also need your input on markings.
