View Full Version : What is this Spydie?

First off, I don't have any pics of this knife because I didn't have the $$ to buy it and I was in a hurry<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>(I was at work), but I wanted to know if anyone might know what model it is.

The best way to describe it is that it's very similar to the Gunting, however, it's smaller (about 4&quot; closed) and the bottom of the handle has a curve inward towards the blade. It has a grip similar to the Native, where the choil is part of the grip.

The hump over the hole is smooth with no texturing, edges, etc. It's just smoothly curved over the hole. The handle seems to have been G-10 or micarta. There was etching on the blade, with Spyderco written over a certain symbol and some more lettering under the symbol but couldn't be seen because it was covered with the price tag. The dealer wasn't even sure what model it was. I've checked the 2001 and 2002 catalog but can't seem to find it.

By this vague description, does anyone have an idea what model Spydie it could be?

P.S.--The price tag was $110, so I assume that it may be a custom collaboration. Thanks for any input.

I believe you are talking about the C40 Jot Singh Khalsa...

Don't mind the add, it was collected by a member over at BF...

By Jove, Vampre, I think you've got it! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Excellent work. Initially, I thought of the old REKAT Gunting, but I remembered that that misbegotten blade was sans hole.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

That's the one!! Excellent call, vampyrewolf!<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Thanks for the feedback, all of you. Now I need to decide which one to pick, PlainEdge or SpyderEdge.

Hey, vampyrewolf, any idea when this model was made/discontinued? This mom and pop Spydie dealer seems to have had a good variety of <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s. I saw a Calypso Jr. SE and PE, Blue handled Delica SE, older Military SE, Rescue, among some other models that I wasn't familiar with. I was in a rush when I had stopped by (was working) but I'll be sure to go back real soon.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

KBR,

Not really certain when the Khalsa was discontinued. It was active when the Spyderco Story came out. There was a post in September of 2001 asking what your favorite discontinued Spydie was and the Khalsa was mentioned there. I'll check my 2000 and 2001 PDFs when I get off work unless some one can answer this before. The Khalsa has been confused with the Gunting, sort of. Check some of the previous posts. I think Bram even weighed in on this subject. By the way the turbaned guy on the knife in the old Khalsa ads is none other than Jot Singh himself. Interesting guy. Later days, dude!

Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

java, thanks for the reply. I had to take a second look because, at first sight, I thought it was the Gunting. I HAVE to get that Spyderco Story.

Very interesting design, and just my luck they have both the Plainedge and Spyderedge versions.

Hard thing is trying to pick which one... <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I've been thinking at the Jot Singh Khalsa too while reading the description. After that I saw that the Vampyrewolf had the same guess. I only saw a picture of this knife, in a catalog ATE sent me, but it's a model hard to forget. It has a lot of personality.
