Who would like such a tanto?

I have noticed that the Spyderco offer of tantos is quite small. As the tanto is in my oppinion, one of the most effective blade style, I tried to conceive one and here's the result. At least some eye candy for you, folks... I hope <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Scary! I noticed you have the same half-blade/half-handle choil as featured on the Calypso. I've come around to really liking that feature.

I'm not a tanto fan at all, and I usually don't like hyper-aggressive lines, but even so that knife kinda grabs me! Must be something primal <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> If you want a little constructive criticism, when you add too many doodads to the knife, it starts to look gimmicky, almost a parody of itself. I think your knife may suffer from that ... I'd love to see the picure without the bottle opener, line cutter, and glass breaker, we'd get to see how much the doodads ruined the lines. I'd also love to see it without the third finger groove -- the one closest to the butt.

In any case, nice job!

Joe, this one's for you. Just a 5 minutes modifications. It's a good thing you asked for items removal. I'm quite curious what would be your oppinion. I think you are right about those too many gizmos, that's why I never liked Victorinox, for exemple. I like it the lite version <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> The only thing I&quot;m not sure of is, the front choil finger groove is a bunch lower than the second groove. I'm not sure if I've ever held a knife like that, so I'm uncertain as to how it would feel. If it felt good, I buy one.

BTW, the reason I commented about that third finger groove. My experience is that a handle with one finger groove will fit everyone. Two finger grooves will usually fit everyone, too. By the time you get to three finger grooves, a bunch of people's hands won't fit well anymore, and for a bunch others, it will raise hot spots. Four finger grooves rules out more people still.

That looks like a cross between several knives, Am Emerson WAVE design, on a hybrid <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> blade, with <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> handle and a S and W rescue knife. Not bad at all. I like it, Make it with Ti liners CF handles, Ti anozied back spacer, 154CM steel and I will buy one.

Nice design, to say the least! Some real world considerations however. As was the experience of someone posting from Massachusetts a little while ago, the results in a lot of the US, (and probably elsewhere around the world), of having a really nice knife bigger than a Cracker Jack prize is that it will get confiscated.

That's why I believe it's important to be able to justify that what you have for EDC is a _tool_. From the experiments I just did, (see Modifying Your <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> posts), you would appear to be correct about the dimensions of your glass breaker point. A vinyl or rubber cap over it will keep it from wearing a hole in your clothing and doesn't even need to be removed for use.

The belt/clothing cutter blade would need to be either replaceable or removeable for sharpening. If someone was trapped by a thick rope, I guess you would have to just accept that when cutting down through the rope to free them they'll get a bit cut. The possibility of rope does argue for a serrated section of the blade, I think.

Years ago, when removing a bent fender from my Volvo so it could be driven, I tired of undoing bolts. Noticing how soft a steel was being used for auto body panels, I just took a good grip and tore the rest of the fender off. That implies a tanto type blade perhaps could actually cut through sheet metal auto body in an emergency. Although the roof is the only place I can think of that would seem to have large enough expanses of single layer to be useful. If your design, could see production, and particularily if it was adopted by any police/EMT/paramedic service, it might be possible that mere civilians could get away with carrying it. It would be nice if it came with a &quot;discrete&quot; clip as an option. But until the day your knife is available I'll feel quite safe and content with my modified Rescue. 80grams and over 80mm of the best edge and steel available.

Like the one with out the bottle opener(no bottles to open here anymore)but its needs the striker.Looks like Spyderco would have them on a few models.Can you try it with a Millitary type blade for those who don't like tantos?

If you want to put a removeable breaker point on any of your FRN handled knives, see the Modifying Your <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> posts for my sources and mounting technique. To shorten the TC engraver point, I'd be very sure of my measurement and groove the shaft where I want to cut it. Then clamp the pointed end, if possible, and snap off the excess.

I have to say, even though the tanto is my least favorite blade style, that's a well thought out knife. With the versitility in the design, that would make a great knife for the professional LEO, firefighter, military etc., and the outdoors folks, as well! I like it! RKBA!

Jeff, sorry for the delay in answering. I think that the Military is already perfect. Taking its blade and fitting it to another handles won't improve it (IMO).

I think it's great. Only two modifications. First, reverse the orientation of the bottle opener, so the hinge side of the knife would face the bottle when using it. That way, you can draw it from tip-down (or tip-up for that matter), and use it more like an ordinary bottle opener, with most of the handle in your hand and pulling up.

Second, though a linerlock is a smooth-opening design, I just don't trust them. How about putting the compression lock with ball detent on this design?

The way you designed the blade is great. Almost the hamaguri grind, but more facets and the option of flat saber grind. If you'd designed it with the chisel grind I'd have said to change the blade profile altogether, make it an Endura-style blade. As it is, it works well.

Keep the glass-breaker and cord-ripper, but I haven't noticed many G-10 knives with the contoured finger grooves. The Gunting has placement guides for the fingers, but they aren't scalloped to contour to the fingers. The Lil' Temperance is closer, but still... How about lined FRN as a pricepoint? Put a steel liner, hidden in the handle, to strengthen it for the glassbreaker.

Thanks, Liko, the reason I put the bottle opener oriented forwards, is that in a knife fight it could be used as a blocker for the other blade. Just an idea, fortunately I wasn't ever involved in kinfe fights so I don't know how would it actually perform.
And it features a compression lock, BTW.

I was reading somewhere here that the minimum run for Spyderco is about 500 knives. I wonder what one would cost at that production point? There have to be at lest 500 spydynuts here that would would jump at, if not on one, in a heartbeat.

Well, I finally figured-out how to disable my &quot;pop-up killer&quot; so I could take a look at that knife, and all I can say is...WOW!!! That IS an EXCELLENT design, and if Sal (Spyderco) doesn't put it in to production, I sure hope that SOMEONE does!

...BTW, I wouldn't change a thing in the design (as seen in the 1st 2 photos)...Even leave the bottle opener on it, since that adds to it uniqueness!
