View Full Version : G-10 colors... Why it is always ABB?
Just a minor beef. I just read into the thread on the paramilitary, and apart from one guy asking for navy blue, the overwhelming majority have asked for "army" colors: olive drab, olive, and desert tan.
While I would buy desert tan, army OD just doesn't float my boat. ABB avoids the SWAT tactical look, but does army OD really look any less tactical or aggressive?
How about some other colors? I, for one, am a fan of deep blues, anywhere from cobalt to navy. Dark slate to shale grey would also be good for most of the knives, maybe the Navigator's grey. If you have to have green, how about a dark forest green, like "British racing" green (you car guys know what I'm talking about)?
Black is the most dominant color of Spyderco knives. I agree, it's monotonous, but it works. If you want to move away from black, don't do it by going to the next most abundant color in the knife world besides bare metal.

Liko,
I still like basic black for most knives because of its ..... well, basicness. It is a neutral color, goes with most things, doesn't get stained with sweat or grime from your hand and for the most part stays looking like when you bought it.
Still I can agree with you about some of the colors suggested. I do like Desert Tan, I think it would look nice. A Cobalt Blue would rock, so two votes for blue. Olive drab would be pretty horrible. I agree, what is the point of going to a non-tactical color, when you're new color is a second choice for tactical color.
I would like to see <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> do some special run knives (or regular run) with the colored carbon fiber. I read an article about it in Blade magazine and it looks sweet, but I have yet to see it in the flesh. Any work from <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> in that direction?
"Ne vyklykaj vowka z leesoo, ..... bo tsej vowk maje <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ." Don't call the wolf out of the forest, because this one carries a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> .

BRG would be nice, but I'd take a good Guards Red in a heartbeat! In fact, I may still have a can of Guards around here... an Endura may look good like that... *wanders off* <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.
Fellow <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>lings,
Garolite G-10, also known alternately as FR-4 or Epoxy Glass Micarta is a continuous-woven glass fabric laminate with an epoxy resin. In addition to knife scales, it is widely used in the electronic and other stuctural industries due to its physical properties. It absorbs virtually no water and offers good dimensional stability - a plus for knife scales (no shrinking). Its tensile strength and impact strength are excellent and it is an excellent electrical insulator.
So much for the good news.
G10 is somewhat more difficult to machine than some other grades of high pressure thermoplastic laminates and current standard color selections are somewhat limited.
Now what is Java's point in this convoluted techno-tale?? Simply put, Spyderco in deference to its customers is concerned about cost of materials, machining, and keeping the price of their knives resonable. Plastic manufacturers such as Ridout Plastics offer few variations at cost. A production run of sufficient quantity for Spydie knife scales requires considerable thought and a new cost-benefits analysis. If enough folks demand and are willing to shoulder the increased production costs then it would make sense to offer a-hoop-and-a-group of available and customer spec'd colors.
I personally am willing to help shoulder this cost for more color variation (I'd like a Millie or Police in Real Tree G10) but I can also understand the cost of warehousing and controlling a larger inventory. Spyderco is pretty responsive to customer demands but I'm not sure if ordering large selections custom G10 for mid-price knives or linen backed Micarta for the higher end handles would be cost effective.
But that's just my humble opinion and I could be wrong.....
Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I also like black most. It's neutral and somehow... efficient. And as someone who is dealing quite a lot with colors, let me tell you that green is very "slicky", as the human eye can distinguish especially the green range. It's very easy to think at a nice green and to obtain something rather ugly. Remeber the olive Delica, one of the worst sold spidies...

I like the color of the OD Delica,Endura. The od Endura is my fav.I don't carry it.Can't stand the thought of looseing it.When they first came out I don't think the Od and tans were in style. That may be why they did not sell.Walk into a walmart now and in clothes about all you see is army type colors.

Hello people,
For sheeple a reasonable sized <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> makes them get a twitch. Add black scales and you have a murmur in the room.Throw in the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>edge and all hell breaks loose.
Black scales give a mean look to any knife IMHO.
Although serious stuff, spydies are fun and the last thing a spydie should do is to to be viewed as some evil thing that can cut you to pieces and then thirst for more blood.
<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> knives are all about form and function. Well, around these latitudes who ever has seen my copilot in SS and the ladybug in black FRN and comboedge remark straight away about the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>edge. Stuff like "Gosh you can really get cut with this thing" or "Hey i just sheared some skin off my finger". Of course these edges do these kind of things. Hell they're designed to cut and boy do they cut. But that's a diff thread discussion and is best left to people who can educate the sheeple.
To remove some intimidation i think it makes some sense to throw in colors in the handle material. hell we might even come up with some really freaky colours that would in themselves be classified as collectible <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
But seriously, IMHO the blade is designed for well cutting and is really sharp. that's intimidating enough for many people.
So why not add some colour to the handle?
It would make the knife more "approachable" and the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> kingdom would grow at a blistering pace.
I'm waiting for the day when i flip out my millie SE (which i hope will come my way someday) and open my paycheck like one of you wrote earlier. That bug will really stop people around here in their track. now if the handle was a yellow or a pink it would "lighten" the "visual bite" and make it more approachable for them sheeple.
IMHO
Have a nice day,
Kaizer
