Blue FRN??

So, how does Spyderco change the colors of FRN? Just, add dye to the batter?



I was thinkin about how cool it'd be if I could have a blue dragonfly. After all, I am a Michigan Wolverine now, go blue.



Anyone think it is a feasible idea for spyderco to offer blades in different flavors?





I've already got a blue delica on it's way (thanks to glasshartt).

I think it would be great to see some differant colors on the Dragonfly.It is at a low enough price to collect all colors.

Speaking of the colors of blue FRN...I have seen at least 3 or 4 different shades of blue on Delica's now, at least in pictures. The colors seem to range from light "baby" blue through purplish to dark blue. What's up with this? Could it just be lot to lot variations? This seems unlikely to me, as the shades are quite different. Here are (images 1&2) examples of two variations I've seen.

The blues that I have here (4 Delicas, 1 jester and 1 ladybug)are all about the same. They are kind of a periwinkle blue. <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

and I'm assuming Spyderco orders blocks of nylon, probably by the ton or something, eh?

I bet people would like it a lot if some spyderco models came in different colors. And I bet a pink endura or something would be a heck of a lot more sheeple friendly.

Your picture looks closer to baby blue. Periwinkle has a little more purple in it. Lets see if this works.

Now I know what that crazy Periwinkle color is! And I quite like it...a Delica with teeth of VG-10 in this color is next on my list.

My blue Rescue just jumped up and hit me on the side of the head. I forgot all about him. He is more of a &quot;columbia&quot; blue. I'd post his pic, but I can't get it down to the right pixels. Once the blue Delicas that they have in stock are gone, they're gone. It was only a limited color run. <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I dont know about FRN but most polymers are shipped in pellet form.

The nylon used by Spyderco comes in a bag of pellets, already the color used. Throw it in a hopper, melt it, then injection mold it into a mold filled with fiberglass filaments (The fiberglass itself would probably clog the injectors), and there's your knife scale.

Changing the color of nylon means changing the color of pellets bought. However, they probably buy the stuff by the pallet (maybe half a ton to a ton at a time), so buying a different color for a small run may not be feasible. There's also tooling problems. You'd have to have a machine dedicated to making that style knife scale in that particular color. That means another SKU, something Spyderco is trying to cut down on the growth of in order to put out new models.

Blue wouldn't be much of a problem supply-wise. They buy blue FRN already for the blue Delicas and Enduras. Since those are still their best sellers in the grassroots market (we all go to the Spyder distributors to add to a collection, but the guys that want one knife are likely to pick an Endura or Delica), though, it's more justified in that case.

But, while we're submitting requests for different color Spydies, how about a blue Native? I think it would rock, especially if you could put a blue powdercoat finish on the clip as well. Or, just a chrome clip and barrel screw.

As far as volumes go, I have a sister-in-law that deals in the sale of plastics. They buy and sell by the train car load. I'm not sure of the volume/density but one car is probably more than a 1/2 ton.
Just think how many handles from a train car of plastic.
