View Full Version : Potential Howard Viele Problem?

Guys,

I recently purchased a Spydie Howard Viele with a PE in VG-10, and I love it. However, I noticed that as you close the knife the tip of the blade (well about 1/2 inch) comes dangerously close to the last spacer seperating the handles. It doesn't seem to be touching the blade, the blade does look like there is a very slight flat spot at that exact point. I've heard rumors that the Salsa's had a problem similar to this just prior to production and was fixed, but I have not heard the problem with the Viele's.

Anyone else have that problem with the Viele model or am I on my own with this one. Also, can you recommend a solution (resharpen, send back to Spyderco, etc.)

Thanks for your help.

I don't know if the Viele is susceptible to this problem, or if you just got bad one. The official answer might be to send it back to Spyderco to get it fixed. Unofficially, no way would I be without my new Viele for weeks when I could fix this easily myself, by taking an emery board and sanding away a little bit of the spacer.

Is yours the newer model or the older one ?
I just looked at mine. (a newer one) and it looks like the stop pin prevents the blade from hitting the spacer. Looks like about a quarter inch of clearance between the blade and the pin. I don't know how the older one compare. (The older models have two pins showing at the piviot end, the new ones only have one.)

Hope this helps.
