View Full Version : any plans for a Gunting based Rescue knife?

I think a read an old post from Bram about this.

Sounded like a really cool idea at the time, is this still a possible model from spyderco?

My thoughts would be to basically take a Gunting trainer, put Orange, or Yellow G10 Handles on its, keep the blunt tip, and rounded horn, but put a serrated edge on it. I'd think the thick blade, and dual liners would even work ok for prying in an emergency.

Firemen would like it because it's big (read: easy to hold w/ gloves), the G10 is nice and grippy (read: easy to hold with sweaty hands) heavy duty, durable as hell, and they would be able to open it with those heavy nomex gloves on.

I'd also think something like this would sell well to the white water rafting crowd. Most carry serrated fixed blades, for cutting line, rescue operations etc. And have the same needs, big handle, easy to hold with gloves or while wet, blunt tip, etc.

I'm a kayaker myself (currently carry a Gerber rescue 1 strapped to my life vest)

I'd think that the kinetic opening would be popular to both crowds. Both need their knives fast, under stress, and often while wearing gloves.

It also might be useful for LEO's who could use it as a self-defense/control device, but also use it for a rescue operation.

Thoughts?

edit, spelling....

I agree, and brought this up before on this forum, or maybe it was Bladeforums. I don't remember Sal's exact words, but he is open to the idea, if the kinetic opening feature is successful enough. So, the best way to see a kinetic opening Rescue is to buy Guntings, and buy the TUSOK when it comes on the market, to prove the concept is marketable. Of course, also bring it up on the forums from time to time, as you have done here. BTW, I believe the TUSOK will have a blade more suited to rescue-type functions than the Gunting blade.

I am a LEO and a paddler, by the way, and while I carry 3 or more blades at work, most prefer to carry only one, so the knife we are discussing here will be great for the one-knife LEO/EMT types as well as outdoor pursuits.

I said the same thing in a previous topic about the Rescue. IMO that kinetic ramp would be quite useful in some emergency situations.

I like the idea, but wouldn't the ramp get in the way an poke the person you were trying to extricate from their seatbelt?

there is no ginger

hmm, hadn't though of the seatbelt situation. In an ideal situation I would avoid cutting the seatbelt against a person's body, but it would be something to consider.

The Ramp get in the way? no actually it wouldn't..the ramp is a great device for distancing..We use the Ramp in the Gunting as is to keep distance between the person and the "rescue" blade itself..
as for cutting seat belts..I could use the knife blade with the ramp against the persons body keeping the blade well away from the person OR..I use the ramp to engage it, the belt and the rear mounted seat belt cutter to zap the belt...
hmmm a Gunting rescue with a rear drive belt cutter? yes....then the ramp keps the person away from the cutter and the ramp is used on the deltoid tendon to keep the person in place..
No you can't have one..
We customized it ourselves..
The seat belt cutter that is..
It works great for dealing with car extractions..we cut the belt and hold bad guy in car at same time till extraction is necessary..

oh well..
have a great day..

yes.. I used to be a ParaMed...it was in my mind in the design..

happy Turkey day!

Sorry to go off track a bit, but last year I'd heard talk of a bigger "military" Gunting. Anything ever come of that?
