Hi All!

I've been purusing the forum for a while and have decided to join. I have a few spydies and am planning to buy a Chinook but I'm wondering which is the better blade steel( CPM440V or CPMS30V in the new Chinook)? I like the looks and the heft of the Chinook with the CPM440V blade. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

By "new Chinook" I'm assuming you mean the one that has not been released yet?

Go ahead and buy the current model, especially if you like the "heft." We don't know exactly when the new model will be out, I'd hate to wait that long, however long it is. You can get the revision when its released and decide which you like better. Who knows, you might decide to keep both! If you don't you shouldn't have a problem getting rid of it.

You NEED a Chinook, you HAVE to have one....BUY IT NOW!!!!!!

BTW, about the steels, I'm not a steel expert, there are some here though, I'm sure they'll be around!

I've got the Chinook as well as a different brand knife in S30V. I can tell you this much........They both cut stuff!!!!

Pachucko,

Thanks for your insights and the welcome! I've received the new catalog as I live near the SFO and the new Chinook I am referring to is called the Chinook II for '03. I plan to buy a Chinook soon but wasn't sure whether to wait for what I presume is better blade steel and shape. I'm relatively new to the knife selection process.

Welcome to the forum, Mt Goat.

The Chinook is a very fine Spydie (currently on my list of "need to get" s) that is
definitely a tough, no nonsense workhorse of a knife.

Although I don't have any Spydies or other knives in S30V, I do have a couple of Millies with CPM440V steel. This steel holds a great edge and I find it very corrosion resistant. Whether you wait until the newer version of the Chinook comes out or not for your purchase, you won't be disappointed with the Chinook, IMO.

Good Luck

If you have the capability and the inclination, I'd also like a scan of that pic.

KBR,

Thanks for the pics!

J Smith & Pachucko,

I have the inclination but unfortuately no capability to send pics. Is that allowed at time prior to '03?

As I stated I am new to this process, but I have both '02 & '03 catalogs in front of me and will try to discribe the Chinook II.

1.Handle appears the same with the clip base offset. 2 clips included for tip up or down carry.

2.The false edge on the top of the blade has been removed as well as 30-40% of the blade in front of the spydie hole.

3.Appears to have a more defined finger choil and textured surface on the blade's spine for thumb control.

I hope this description helps and is accurate!

I really like my Chinook. Is it very common for Spyderco to update a collaboration knife? I can only think of the Herbst which was re-introduced. Must be others. Whatever, I am satisfied with the current model. Jerry

IIRC, One of the main goals of this revision was to decrease weight. Anyone?
