Hey,

I am planning on buying my first spyderco

and need some help on which knife to choose.

I need it for primarily self-defense.

I dont want a big knife like the police.

I have heard that the merlin is a good knife to carry.

What knife do suggest is the best for this use?

Yesterday, I received my first (there will be more to follow, I'm certain) Spyderco... the Native. I too was looking for a small carry knife, with "defense" in mind. The review of this knife by Martial Arts expert Fred perrin sold me on the Native.

Look here for the review:

Hope this helps a bit.

The Native would be a good choice. My personal preference is the Wegner. Here is a thread on the Wegner as a defensive tool:

1. If you are going to integrate the knife into a regimen of martial arts training, then I would recommend one of the Gunting or forthcoming Temperance, and trainer.

2. If you wan't an optimized "slash and run" tool, especially if you lack martial arts training, then I'd recommend a Civilian or Matriarch (definitely with no utility use).

3. If you want a high-performance knife that can serve both utiliy and defensive functions, then you can't go wrong with a Wegner.

Get whichever one feels the best to YOU. But keep in mind state and local laws. The Native is my all around favorite, so far.
