i was wondering what angle is good for general purpose use. i keep my military and standard at 25 degrees and my jd smith at 20 degrees.i am using a lanskey system so i am limited to the holes in the guide. thanks a bunch. thegreg

I think either of those would be a good angle to use. Most people I know keep their knives at a 21º-23º angle. I use the 40º slots on the sharpmaker for most stuff, I would guess that translates to 20º on the system you are using.

I have found that the angles on the Lansky system are not necessarily the angles that end up on the edge. You may want to take a scale and measure the Lansky angles.
