I have seen several people post here that combo edges are not as desirable as a full plain or full serrated edge. But surely the combo edge must be a popular option, or else Spyderco wouldn't keep turning out models with that feature.

I'd like to hear some from of the proponents of the combo edge as to why this feature works for them. My only knife is the Native plain edge, but I am thinking about getting a combo edge for the next one.

Matthew,

It is my impression that is one of the ways where the opinions of Internet knife nuts differs from the general Spyderco buyer. I have the serrated native and have been very pleased with it. It provides you with the best of both worlds - serrations and a little bit of plain edge. Get one and compare. Serration's rule!

I too prefer a serrated edge. The combination edge is popular due to providing the best features of both serrated and plain cutting edges.
A serrated edge cuts more effectively, more linear inches of cutting surface, much better penetration than just sliding a sharp plain edge across most materials and more efficient separation of the material being cut.
However, plain edges work better for carving, whittling, sone skinning applications, the cutting of certain foods and scraping. Therefore the combination is trying to give you the best of both edges on one blade.

It has been my experience that whey cutting cretain materials, cardboard for example, that the serrations get "clogged up" and stop cutting until you take the bits of paper off. Serrations also tend to get caught on tape much easier. But none the less serrations go through cutting tasks much faster, especially rope. Serration tends to hold its edge longer. On the other hand plain blades can go through cardboard like it isn’t even there, and it is a nice clean cut. I am sure you know this. When I first got my Native I thought I would have a harder time with cardboard and such, but I was wrong!
Plain blades are much easier to sharpen, just a few minutes and you have an edge that will last weeks.
BTW I also have a 50/50 Endura. I love it when I need the serration to start a tough cut. IMHO 50/50 is the more utilitarian minded.

Ehh, supposed to be Thorin... : )

I haven't used a spydie-egde serration, but end up using the serrated blade on my multi-tool when I need one.

Just wondering though... Sal, does Spyderco have any knives about 2-2.5 inches in length with a 60 plain/40 spyderedge? i prefer the smaller blades and am looking at a cricket, but it only comes in one or the other, no combo...

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Hi Mcplb. That's one of the subjects that is mostly personal preference.

Hi Vampyrewolf. Welcome to the forum. Any of our serrated models hae a small portion of the tip that is plain. with a serrated knife as small as 2" - 2.5", at least 3/8" will be plain. We do not at this time make a combo in that range.
