Made a trip to Dallas today and Mike had a whole box of Spydies waiting. Had to leave the CF Delicas til next time but walked out with the Ronin, another American Pride, and both versions of the svelte SS Cricket. Wasn't expecting the the Spydersaw but there she was all dressed up and slyly suggesting we go someplace more private. We got to know each other a little better as the afternoon wore on. The more I knew about her, the more I gazed at her, the more I liked what I "saw". Let me tell you more about her....

Wow! A Catcherman with teeth! The Spydersaw is an impressive looking tool. The FRN clippit handle is the same volcano grip baby we find on the Catcherman but with a bigger bugged and differently inscribed logo. The Spydersaw retains the same McBurnette front lock as the Catcherman and incorporates the Boye dent. This makes for a safer lock and facilitates finding the lock release.

The blade is AUS-6 per Spyderco and is listed as 1/16” thick. On examination however the blade geometry is different. The width along the cutting edge of the blade is slightly greater than 1/16” whereas the blade spine begins as thick as the cutting edge and has a distinct taper to less than 1/16” but flares slightly to its original thickness toward the tip. The point at which the blade thickness tapers is at the immediate rear of the huge 19/32” Spydie hole and looks almost like a recaso across the full width of the blade. The blade folds for the same tip up carry as the Catcherman but the pronounced hump and blade width mean more of the blade’s surface is exposed when the saw is folded. There is more flex in the blade than the Catcherman but, hey, it's a saw.

The double row of reverse cut teeth fill all but the last 3/8” at the flat bottomed tip. The teeth look aggressive enough for any pruning tasks and should handle most of your camp chores. I won’t be abusing this serial numbered model but the price is reasonable enough to buy a “beater”. I like the concept and think this would make a great emergency/survival tool along with your normal EDC. I do think ridges across the spine of the blade at the hole would add control and a more secure grip during use. I’ll take another but before I do, I was wondering how the heck we’re going to sharpen them teeth on the 204!

IIRC, saws need a flare at the teeth or they will only cut efficiently to the depth of the teeth. The flare in the blade enables the blade to shed saw dust. Otherwise, the teeth fill up and pretty much stop cutting.

I can't wait to get my hands on a Spydersaw... Kind of like a Swiss Army saw on steroids!!

Thanks for the info Fozzy. I knew there was a reason for the varied geometry but couldn't put my finger on it. The reverse cut teeth are interesting to look at too. They seem to be cut like the teeth on a bow shaped camp saw to make cuts in both directions. Really want to score another and give it a field test.

Nothing would please me more than to read how many Cool Samos this baby would score after a trip to the jungles of Malaysia. I'll drop you a line soon. Great to see you out here, dude!

Java - I picked up my knives from Mike also, on Saturday. I was impresed with the saw, it makes a great camping companion. I really liked the ss Crickets. RR

Rico,

Mike was glad to see both of us with all the new Spydies coming in. He's good folks. I got out of there for under $300 and still left the Delicas! It's getting dangerous to take Java the Younger there too. He really likes the plastic pellet Stoner replica. Christmas cold be expensive this year.
