Hello everyone. I have just aquired my first spyderco knife a serated edged carbon handled police knife.
I live in the UK and bought it over the internet from a local dealer.
One thing on it puzzles me.
The base of the blade says seki japan not golden colorado earth which is what i expected.
I have checked the seki site and the say they are bona- fide spyderco manufacturers.
The knife in a spyderco box was advertised as spyderco.
Is this knife genuine?
Thanks in advance
Simon
Yes, it is genuine. Spyderco have most of their knives made in Seki City ,Japan.
Hopes this helps.

Welcome Simon. Always nice to see another UK Spydie fan. Nice choice for a first Spyderco! It's genuine alright - most spydies are made in Japan. But if you don't like it I'll take it off your hands............

Thanks for the advice everyone.Must have seemed a silly question in hindsight.
My suspicious policemans mind I suspect.
I nearly bought a civilian but when shopping around I got some negative feedback about it saying the tip easily snapped off and its use was best restricted to maritime activity.
So went for the Police. Thats not to say I wont be buying a civilian in the future.
I am also told that as the knife is featured in the "Hannibal" novel prices are somewhat inflated as wannabe Lecters are snapping them up.
What do you think???
Simon
The tip of the Civilian is indeed fragile, and the knife is intended for self-defence and as a backup tool for law enforcement, not for daily use. BUT, I have a second-hand Civilian that's old and was carried a lot, and from the condition of serrations I'd say used for regular cutting tasks a lot, and the tip was still more or less intact. But you are right, for regular cutting tasks the shape of the Civilian is not too great.
As for Hannibal wannabes snatching Civilians, I don't know. I always thought that Harpy was the main piece in the novel. Lecter used one in Florence, and bought another to replace it once he got to USA. Civlian is mentioned only once, and only because the knife seller was surprised that Lecter knew about it, since it's a highly specialized knife. And I *think* there's no mention of the Civilian in use, while Harpy is described in all its juicy detalis... Although I've read the novel soon after it came out, so I am probably very very rusty...

Havent read the book Vess so I cant comment.
As a newbie collector what would you recommend as my next purchase everyone?
Military is a good all-arounder. I've got my second one, and love it to death. Have plain and serrated now...
Chinook is really good if what you need is a tank of a knife. It's indestructible, and thick and heavy.
But really, it's all good. The ones I know I'll keep are Gunting, Military, Chinook and Native. The rest I can live without, but proably won't... But those four are keepers.

Hi Simon. Vess is right - the Military is a great knife. Or, if you want something a bit smaller, how about the classic Delica? Just got a Native in S30V which is also really nice. You really can't go far wrong. There are some really knowledgable people here and they're a friendly lot too. Ask away! By the way - whereabouts in UK are you from?

Hi all and thanks for the advice I am from Leeds in Yorkshire England.
I am a serving police constable(14 years in).Married with 2 kids, I like to think I am friendly and approachable.
I saw one of the junior cops showing off his spyderco amongst all the other kit on his belt to anyone who would listen.
I saw it was quality and made a mental note about it so have quietly bought one it wont be paraded on my duty belt we call these people "tackleberries".
Thanks again Simon

Howdy Simon! Welcome to Land!
As one who has read Hannibal multiple times for a Psych course, it's definitely a Harpy that is mentioned as being used several times- Gnocco, Pazzi, and Deogracias in Florence, in addition to cutting up a tabloid.
The Civilian and Harpy both are mentioned as being purchased at a G&K show in the US. There's also mention of a "Straight, serrated Spyderco with a four-inch blade" at the same show. Maybe a Police or Military?
The Man's Prayer- I am a man. But I can change. If I have to. I guess...

I believe that you should buy a Native in Combo Edge (CE). I have one, and love it dearly. It's spear-point blade and chisel grind are wonderful.
I also just bought a Dodo, which I'm also very pleased with, also Serrated Edge (SE).

Welcome to the Spyder forum! You will find that amongst the many regular visitors here, a few brother/sister law enforcement officers. I am but one (17 yrs police lieutenant in Michigan).
As my screen-name here implies, I favor the curved Spydercos for just about everything, having settled upon a few favorites (in case it's of interest):
SpyderHawk for defensive/utility role
Harpy for utility cutting
Dodo for utility (currently carried in place of my trusty Harpy)
I own Civilians and Matriarchs, but they are indeed special-purpose blades not suited to my current needs. While many prefer straight-blades for stabbing/poking holes in media, I don't feel at all limited in pull-cuts. You may feel the need to own a few Spydercos in order to fairly judge which one to carry (or just rotate them through based upon the day).
I am what I am, and that's all that I am. Popeye

You really can't go wrong with any Spyderco knife. I carry both a SS SE Police (VG-10), and a SS PE Delica (AUS-6) as two of my EDC's.
As a companion to the Police model, the Delica is perfect, as it's almost the same knife, but in a smaller version.
