Couple of ? from a new Spyderco fan.

1. First let me comment that this is a very good forum from what I've been reading on it. Also, the members here are exceedingly cordial and informative you all have my compliments.



My first question is: I recently purchased my first Spyderco (won't be my last), a Harpy. I plan on purchasing a Sharpmaker to keep it sharp and I would like to know at what angle are these Harpys' sharpened to at the factory ( mine is un-earthly sharp) so I can always be sure to re-sharpen it at the correct angle?



My second question is: How exactly does one understand the figures given on the Steel Chart found on the "edge-u-cation" page of the SPYDERCO site? I haven't been able to figure out the measurements/quantities listed there; ie.Carbon 0.85-1.00, Nickel 0.30, etc. Are they itemized as percentages or what? Thanks for your consideration.

Welcome to the forums, glad you like it here. It's certainly my favourite place to hang out <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

The factory sharpens the edges to a very acute angle somewhere around 30 degrees included. Sal usually advises using the 20 degree slots when resharpening with the Sharpmaker for a more durable edge (40 degress included angle). The instructions and video which come with the Sharpmaker make it all very clear.

You're right, the quantities of the various elements in the steels are quoted as percentages.
