Opinions on the Calypso

I used to own a Calypso JR with Micarta handle which I lost, and am awaiting a full sized Calypso in a trade. My early Calypso Jr was AUS8 and I understand the full sized version was in VG10. While I really like the Calypso Jr, I've never handled the full sized model. Any opinions of it? Also, is it true that it has been dicontinued?

Yes it is true that it has been discontinued. As for the change in steel, you should be pleasantly suprised. The new VG-10 steel is excellent in my opinion. I have one of the Calypso Jr ltwt and a full size in VG-10, love them both. As for the knife in general it like all other spydercos is a high quality knife. My personal preference is that its a little to big for my tastes. But then I have to dress up and my Viele fits great with a suit. I don't think you will be disappointed with this knife.

I share your grief! <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> The calypso, both large and small ones are excellent knives!! The blade geometry is so good, I just can't stop slicing paper to demonstrate its prowess! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> Sal did mentioned earlier that the Micarta Calypsos had to be discontinued due to low sales... But the leaf-shaped spydie lives in the all SS Calypso II and the Calypso ltwt which I find, are as equally as AWESOME as the Micarta ones.. Well, if you still pine for those handsome Micarta Calypsos, I think its still being sold at the Spyderco Factory Outlet... Numbers are limited, so better give Patti a call! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

It seems like the large Calypso has developed a little cult following. It's a very nice knife, but it just didn't sell well for whatever reason. However, some people really like it.

I'm not sure when it was discontinued, but it may have been a year and a half ago. Does that sound right?

Anyways, in my opinion, it's one of the better Spydies out there.

Thanks for the info guys. I received the full sized Calypso, and it is great! Maybe Sal will consider re-introducing it in the near future in a lightweight format.
