View Full Version : A Question about Edge.
I have several Spyderco knives, and I love them all. Of course, they all happen to be the serrated Spyderedge. If you look at my knives you can see that the edge of the blade has only been ground from one side. Sort of like a chisel point. (Which oddly seems ground for left handed use. Course, I'm a lefty so I don't mind.)
Do all spyderco knives have this? Or are the plain edge knives ground from both directions?
Does anyone know the advantages or disadvantages to this single edge grind? Why use it? Pardon me if the answer is obvious, I'm not much of a technical man when it comes to blade edge. Thanks!

The plain edge blades are ground on both sides. IIRC Sal has posted previously about the reasons for grinding serrations on one side only and what appears to be the wrong side at that. However for the life of me I can't remember when or where. A search here or at Bladeforums.com might uncover the answer. Or maybe there are others here whose memories haven't been affected by the ravages of time (and the '60s <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>).

The only knives I had ever seen with a 2 sided grind on serrations, were those made by Meyerco. I had a Speedster model, but the serrations did not cut well. Spyderco's serrations are the best.
Hi Matt. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.
The serrations were put on the "front" side of the knife because serrations tend to "veer" in the direction away from the grind side. Most people would hold the thing being cut in the left hand and cut with the right. Made as we do, the knife veers away from the hand holding the object. This was more secure for most people.
Serrations can be ground on both sides, but it is far more expensive. the serration can be sharpened on both sides with a Sharpmaker if that is desired.
