Spyderco HOLES in new B/M catalog

Was looking at the new Benchmade 2007 catalog today and
it appears that the VEX was just the beginning.

The "red" class knife has 2 new offerings with our beloved spyder
holes.. the Pika and the mini Pika in addition to the VEX.

The "blue" class knife has 2 knives with the spydie hole.Interesting enough they are designs of Bob Lum. They are called the "Deja Vu" and the
"mini deja vu". Deja vu had an interesting spelling that I could not remember.

In the "HK" line up there was 1 knife with the Spydie hole.Sorry I was not
able to get the name or find out if it was an auto as many of the HK's
are.

Alas none of the knives mentioned used the "Axis" lock.To me this would
have been a very interesting combo.

The meaning of 'Deja vu' is 'seen before'.

BTW, it's the new movie with Denzel Washington (something about time travel).

Does the catalogue have something saying "The Spyderhole is used with permission of Spyderco" or a similar comment? Hope so, but with the track record...

This topic has been discussed ad nauseum on the forum concerning the Vex. A search for the word Vex should bring up something.

The line from both companies was that Spyderco and BM had reached an agreement.

That said, I doubt you'll see any credit or mention given to Spyderco in BM's literature.

No offense intended, but yeah, I've seen the Vex debate (and see sig). My question is: has BM actually changed? Of course, I think I know the answer to that one.

IIRC, the license that a custom maker could obtain from Spyderco for the trademarked hole had a limit on the number of knives produced.

I tried to bring this up a couple days ago and the thread started getting nasty so I deleted it.

Sal and Benchmade both have said that they have an agreement. I hope it's a good one.

I also heard that one of the Griptilians will be offered with the Spyderhole. I do hope they give credit.

However, sometime in the past I had heard that Spyderco took Benchmade to court regarding the "hole" and lost. I have no idea if this is true or not. I don't really care and I don't want to start a "heated debate".

Regardless of an agreement, one can still have an opinion about a company using another company’s trademark, especially when that company claimed in the past that an alternative opening device performed better.

Apparently there is an "HG" Griptilian that has a round hole and presumably an Axis lock.

If I had to guess, I would bet that Spyderco made the Vex. It is also a very good possibility that Spyderco is making the Benchmade Lum that is coming out.

I see "B/M" and the abbv. makes me think "body modification." Good to know it stands for "Benchmade." Good to know...

lets theoretically assume that Benchmade and Spyderco's "agreement" is that Spyderco will be producing SpyderHole equipped knives *for* Benchmade, and that Benchmade has licence to use the SpyderHole *as long as* the knife in question is manufactured by Spyderco, but is a Benchmade branded product with a BM SKU.....

Benchmade could improve their standing in my eyes with a simple statement....

"Benchmade has contracted with Spyderco to produce the Vexx (and other round-hole-openers) under licence, Benchmade has permission to use the SpyderHole opening system on these specific knives only, these knives are built for us by our freinds at Spyderco, but they are a Benchmade warrantied and covered product, the SpyderHole is a Trademark of Spyderco and is used under licence"

a simple statement like that and i'd likely end my personal boycott of Benchmade and purchase a couple of their knives

....and that's all i have to say about the "Vexx incident", sorry to derail the post, we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress.....

Do those holes benefit Spydeco? We will likely never know. I trust Sal to make the most of his trademark. Benchmade is not some Chi-Com rip-off outfit. If they use the Spydie Hole I assume Sal proffits. As such, I do not care and I will go to Spyderco (NGK) for the real deal.

I hope I am right about this. If not, someone at Spyderco give us a sign.

I am a Spyderholic and anything else does not feed the need. If these holes hole corrupt Benchmade buyers... very cool. Benchmaders, come to the light.

I still think the BM stands for Bowel Movement, but that is just my opinion of their integrity.

There is an agreement. Sal said so during the whole Vex episode.

Here's the post Sal made about said agreement over on Bladeforums.
