Thumbs up G-10 Dragonfly in BLACK

I can't take it anymore with the foliage green G-10 so I took it upon myself to change things up a little:

It's RIT dye. And now that I've seen how it turns out, I'm tempted to buy a Rock Lobster and dye it black as well

Nobody else but Spyderco uses foliage green G-10, so it's a sort of a trademark.

Nice! Any process notes you can share? How did you prepare dye, how long left in, etc. ?

Thank you! I'm hoping the dye was well absorbed into the G-10, instead of just on the surface like with FRN. And just like you, I'm seriously thinking of doing this to my G-10 Delica 4.

It was black Rit dye, in liquid form (came in a little bottle), did it in a pot on the stove, the water was not boiling, but kept at a temperature of approx. 170-180 degrees F. (kept measuring with a temperature gun). Probably left the scales in for about 10 minutes or so. Yes, I wanted them deep, dark and black. They are impossible to see once you drop them in, so to check on them I had to keep pulling them out. Once they were done, I pulled them out, rinsed them off, dried them off thoroughly with a hair drier, then re-assembled.

Hope this helps

It will be interesting to see how the dye holds up. At least some of the folks who have done it to FRN seem to be reporting that it has held up well for them. Don't think G-10 would be any more porous than FRN, but it might have less natural lubricity. Generally speaking, nylon is one of the worst plastics to paint.

That looks great. The G-10 D'fly is getting more and more tempting.

Very nice job and thanks for being the first to attempt dyeing folilage green G-10 and reporting the results. Interested in a long term use report to learn how well the black RIT holds up.

That looks great. Do keep us up to date on how it wears. Might be a cheap alternative to having scales made in the future.

A tip for the scales take a hanger and bend it through the screw holes carefully of course so you can just dip them and swirl then around them check them periodically thats how i did my spyderhawks but i submerged the wholes knives RIT does contain SALT so be aware if you fully submerge non h-1 knives RINSE AND OIL THEM WELL

I've been meaning to do this for quite some time, just was waiting for the D'fly to come out. Didn't want to try it on any of my more expensive foliage green G-10 knives in case it didn't turn out well. But before I go nuts and start dyeing every FG knife I have, I'm gonna listen to others and see how it wears over a period of several months first.
