Designed by Tom Zoomer, an outdoor enthusiast and survival skills instructor from the Netherlands, it features a broad, drop-point blade expertly crafted from Crucible® CPM® 20CV® particle metallurgy stainless steel. This advanced alloy contains a high volume of vanadium carbides and the highest amount of chromium of any vanadium-rich steel currently available. This potent recipe of elements ensures high wear resistance, superior corrosion resistance, and impressive impact toughness—properties that are further enhanced by a classic hamaguri (convex) grind that ensures a breathtakingly sharp yet resilient cutting edge.

For maximum strength and comfort, the Zoomer’s stout concealed tang extends completely through the knife’s handle, which consists of two mirror-image pieces of solid G-10 painstakingly machined to yield a beautifully contoured, hand-filling grip devoid of “hot spots.” A recess at the butt end of the handle allows access to the tang’s lanyard hole and leaves the tang end exposed as a potential hammer surface. Most notably, an extended shelf at the handle’s forward end provides a rest for the user’s thumb, enhancing comfort, control, and leverage during detailed cutting chores.

The Zoomer’s sheath is crafted from thick, premium-quality leather. It features a wide, “floating” belt loop and deep, pouch-style construction that holds the knife securely with the edge facing in either direction. A large covered pouch also offers handy on-board storage for small tools and other survival gear. To protect your Zoomer knife and sheath when not in use, and as an extra added touch of class, it comes complete with a handsome zippered storage pouch.

Created as a tribute to our nation's courageous firefighters, Spyderco's "Thin Red Line" knives are distinctive expressions of our workhorse lightweight models. This is done through a powdered metallurgical process. The Mule Team project was created to give more people access to various steels using a standard pattern for a fixed blade knife. The hope of the project was to find out what these steels can do by making them available at an affordable price for our Knife Knuts and Steel Junkies. We test our products constantly, but we’ve always maintained that no amount of “testing” can provide the information that real-world use can.

With the ZDP-189 Mule our goal was to reach the optimal hardness that we had in our folders (in 2009 as well as presently). The droplets are accelerated by the jets to impact onto a collection surface while still in a semi-solid condition. LC200N is also a true martensitic steel that achieves its hardness through traditional heat treating, so its hardness level can be precisely controlled to meet the demands of specific uses. Regarded as the material of choice for applications that involve high static and dynamic loads in corrosive environments, LC200N is widely used in the food, chemical, recycling, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in mirror-polished dies used in the plastics industry. It is best known, however, as NASA’s preferred material for the ball bearings used in their high-performance aerospace equipment.

LC200N’s unique alloy composition includes: 0.3% Carbon, 15% Chromium, 0.5% Nitrogen, 0.95% Molybdenum, 0.5% Nickel, and 1.00% Manganese. Also known as AISI A11, K294 (Böhler-Uddeholm), and CPM® 10V (Crucible®), PMA11 is an extremely wear-resistant tool steel that is capable of achieving a high working hardness. One of the world's premier steel choices for highly wear-resistant industrial tooling, in its CPM 10V form it is also one of the favorite steels of renowned custom knifemaker and Spyderco collaborator Phil Wilson.

PMA11's alloy composition is as follows: Carbon: 2.45%, Manganese: 0.50%, Silicon: 0.90%, Chromium: 5.30%, Molybdenum: 1.30%, Vanadium: 9.50%, Sulfur 0.08%. Its large volume of hard vanadium carbides provides substantially better wear-resistance than typical high-carbon, high-chromium die steels such as D2 and D7. In knife blades, this translates to outstanding edge retention and good toughness, especially in shorter knives. These properties are maximized through the particle metallurgy process, which greatly reduces alloy segregation and ensures a homogenous microstructure. Boasting over three percent carbon and almost a 15 percent vanadium, its advanced alloy composition gives it the highest wear resistance of any cold-work tool steel available today. Considered a viable alternative to solid carbide in the production of intricate industrial tool designs, it also makes an extraordinary blade steel. Capable of extreme sharpness and unparalleled edge retention, the CPM 15V in this Mule Team is even better when its performance is optimized by a special heat-treating protocol developed by acclaimed custom knifemaker Shawn Houston.

All Mule Team blades are sold consumer-direct and available only at the Spyderco Factory Outlet or through Spyderco.com.

Released: May 2023

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0562/7189/6620/files/31d611a4-51b2-4970-beb0-4b37fe09ac0f.jpg?v=1772491495
