Only 1 CBN stone - what grit?

#1

Post by Spyderwebs »

I need a Diamond / CBN stone for my super steels and want to get a metallic bonded stone. They're expensive so I'd prefer to only buy one. Maaaaaaybe 2 if you sell me on the benefits.

If I to only buy one, what size grit should it be? 400?

A semi coarse edge is fine. Currently have a SM. Only want metallic bonded construction stones. Do not want SM diamond stones (non-bonded is too aggressive)

I've seen Sal comment that the 400 grit Sharpmaker CBN stone is sufficient for getting a good edge if you go light with the swipes to finish. Mentioning this just for the grit size; understand you want a bonded stone instead.

Bite the bullet - get a proper diamond sharpening water stone at 300 or 400 grit and get a 1000 at a later stage. You will be set for life (unless you sharpening is your source of income, in that case it will still last you a few yearas).

There are the godly stones by Shawn, or look at the stones offered by JKI (JapaneseKnifeImports), or - not sure these are being still made - stones by practical sharpening (I have 400 and 2000).

That would be my way to go about this.

300-400 IMO

If you want to expand later you could get something coarser (150), or something finer (1000)

400 gives an excellent all-purpose edge. I carry a 180 diamond plate for reestablishing an apex on sorely neglected kitchen cutlery and a 400/800 CBN for refining the edge. I seldom use the 800 side, as 400 gives a more durable edge for kitchen work. (Cuts well for longer before needing service) I also carry a Sharpmaker with brown and CBN rods for serrated blades. On a recent road trip I sharpened the kitchen knives at all 6 houses where we stayed as guests.

Trash cheap stones getting to a 600 CBN, as a butcher for years it’s the 600 that you want as your best stone.
Cheap stones shaping, expensive stones sharpening…

Spyderco’s CBN bench stone is dual-sided 400/800.

I agree with this guy. National Knives has this stone for $98, about $5 cheaper than other places. I just got one myself.
