The Para Military 2 has the proud distinction of being one of Spyderco’s most popular, trusted, and collectible designs—all at the same time.
From a popularity perspective, the Para Military 2 is arguably the perfect combination of classic design, one-size-fits-all ergonomics, and quintessential Spyderco CLIPIT® functionality. Trust-wise, these qualities make it the go-to choice of tens of thousands of savvy knife users worldwide. If something needs cutting, many turn to their “PM2”—period. And since more of a good thing is always better, the hunger for different variations of its iconic design remains stronger than ever.
To date, these driving factors have resulted in multiple full-line versions of the Para Military 2, numerous Sprint Run® editions, and scores of Exclusive expressions. Together, they have offered knife collectors a broad spectrum of blade steels, shapes, and coatings, as well as a dizzying variety of handle materials, colors, and textures. However, just when you think all the possibilities have been exhausted, we introduce something new and truly different: the Para Military 2 Lightweight.
If you’re familiar with Spyderco history, you probably know that the Para Military 2 is the second generation of the original Para Military design, which was a scaled-down expression of the classic Military™ Model featuring a Compression Lock® mechanism. You may also know that the Para Military 2, in turn, inspired its own smaller offspring—the compact Para® 3.
Sized to offer a legally and socially friendly 3-inch blade, the Para 3 began life just as its predecessors did—with machined, peel-ply-textured G-10 handle scales and substantial nested stainless steel liners. Its rapid rise to popularity similarly inspired several other G-10-handled variations boasting elite blade steels and signature themed handle colors.
In 2019, Spyderco revolutionized the design by introducing a lightweight version. It was built with injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle scales, meticulously engineered microliners, and a streamlined version of our Compression Lock® mechanism. That model—the archetypal Para 3 Lightweight—turned out to be a game changer.
The Para 3 Lightweight dramatically reduced the weight of the design compared to its G-10-handled counterparts and added the enhanced grip traction of a molded handle texture. Not surprisingly, it also quickly became a platform for its own family of variations, including full-line production models, Sprint Run expressions, and an array of Exclusives, all boasting unique combinations of blade steels, handle colors, and other features.
Based on the well-established track record of the Para 3 Lightweight, a Para Military 2 Lightweight seemed to make perfect sense. In essence, it represents a bit of “reverse evolution,” but in the best possible way.
Released in 2026, the Para Military 2 Lightweight introduces a new dimension to this iconic design while making it available in a leaner, more affordable, and even more pocket-friendly format.
The game-changing feature of its design is its handle construction, which centers around tough injection-molded FRN scales. The ultra-lightweight scales help reduce the knife’s weight to a mere 2.8 ounces (78g), making it more than 25 percent lighter than its G-10 counterparts.
They also incorporate our signature Bi-Directional Texture™ pattern—a deeply-molded array of opposing steps that ensures an extremely secure, non-slip grip in even the most demanding environmental conditions. Significantly “grippier” than peel-ply-textured G-10, it maintains its high-traction texture even after extended pocket wear.
Unlike the substantial nested stainless steel liners of the G-10-handled Para Military 2, the Lightweight model uses minimalist liners to provide strength at critical points of the pivot area. A separate lock bar also forms the heart of its streamlined Compression Lock mechanism.
This revolutionary feature locks the blade securely open when in use and also contributes to the knife’s advanced, weight-saving design.
One of the most popular aftermarket accessories for G-10-handled Para Military 2s is a deep-pocket carry clip. The Para Military 2 Lightweight delivers ultra-discreet carry right out of the box with a deep-pocket wire clip.
Easily reversible for left- or right-side tip-up configuration, it allows the knife to ride over half an inch deeper than G-10 models. Its “see-through” wire construction also blends unobtrusively with the color of the user’s pants. To make the knife easier to draw from the pocket, the handle includes a generously sized lanyard hole that allows the attachment of fobs, lanyards, and safety lines.
The Para Military 2 Lightweight’s blade is crafted from Carpenter® Technology’s CTS® BD1N. An improved version of CTS BD1, which Spyderco helped pioneer, BD1N is a nitrogen-enriched high-carbon chromium steel that offers an excellent balance of hardness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness.
The full-flat-ground blade of the Para Military 2 Lightweight capitalizes on all these properties to deliver outstanding cutting performance and reliability.
Its fully accessible Trademark Round Hole™ allows swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening and proudly declares the knife’s Spyderco pedigree.
The basic version of the Para Military 2 Lightweight features a tumble-finished blade and brightly finished handle hardware and is available in both PlainEdge™ and fully serrated SpyderEdge™ formats. For tactical environments where light discipline is a concern, the all-black version of the design cloaks its PlainEdge blade in a non-reflective Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating and pairs it with matching black-coated handle hardware.
The Para Military 2 Lightweight ushers in a new era of this revered design. It faithfully delivers all the proven features and benefits of its predecessors in an ultra-lean format that offers enhanced grip texture and turnkey deep-pocket carry.
Like its forebears, it is destined to inspire a wide range of variations highlighting different handle colors, blade steels, coatings, edge configurations, and other features.
