Edge Grinds

The edge is the heart of a knife’s performance. As the first manufacturer to feature serrated edges on folding knives, Spyderco understands the importance of edge configuration. We proudly offer a choice of edge types, each optimized for specific cutting tasks and user preferences.

PlainEdge

This continuous, razor-sharp edge is characterized by a plain format with no serrations. PlainEdge blades are easy to sharpen and are ideal for general-purpose use and detailed cutting tasks where precision matters most.

SpyderEdge

Spyderco’s signature serrated edge configuration, a SpyderEdge format, consists of a repeating pattern of one large serration followed by two smaller ones. This unique two-step pattern increases the functional edge length by up to 24% and cuts fibrous materials with extreme speed and efficiency. Designed for tough tasks where aggressive cutting performance is critical, it also retains its sharpness longer.

CombinationEdge

This hybrid edge format includes both PlainEdge™ and SpyderEdge™ sections in a single cutting edge. This dual configuration offers the best of both worlds, combining precision and control with extreme cutting power.

Serrated Edge

This edge configuration features a series of uniform serrations. It is primarily used on knives designed for cutting bread and other baked goods, as it allows clean cuts without compressing or tearing the food product.

Trainer

This configuration features a purposely blunted edge and rounded point to allow safe contact with a training partner. Trainer blades often include holes to match the weight, balance, and handling of their live-blade counterparts. Spyderco trainers feature red handle scales for instant identification and are used for the safe practice of personal-defense skills. They are also excellent tools to teach knife safety and proper handling.
