Why the Round Hole?

Spyderco’s Trademark Round Hole™ allows the blade of a folding knife to be opened quickly and easily with only one hand. This groundbreaking innovation was a key element of our first patented knife design and, along with our pioneering use of the pocket clip, defined the form of the modern folding knife.

Unlike thumb studs, disks, or other opening devices that protrude from the blade, the Round Hole offers a larger, more accessible surface area without interfering with the blade’s cutting path. It preserves the clean, functional lines of the blade and eliminates the need for additional hardware or excess bulk. It also allows for the use of one-handed opening methods that are not possible with other opening devices.

The Round Hole isn't just a feature—it’s a proud, registered trademark of the Spyderco brand. In addition to its functional presence on our larger folding knives, you’ll see it used as a practical alternative to a nail nick on smaller folders and included in the design theme of our fixed blades. In all cases, it is an instantly recognizable symbol of Spyderco’s brand identity.
